* How has COVID-19 impacted your commitment to widening access to working in the NHS, specifically regarding your commitment to provide work experience placements for aspiring students?
* How has the closing of Fair Train impacted your work experience accreditation and how do you plan on ensuring consistent work experience placements are provided for students wanting exposure to the clinical setting
* Who is the lead contact for work experience programmes as recommended by Health Education England?

Thank you for taking the time to look into my enquiry

Dear Elizabeth Bailey

Thank you for your e-mail of 18/11/2020 requesting information regarding
HEE’s work experience programme.

HEE can confirm in accordance with S.1 (1) of the FOIA, in relation to
your question “Who is the lead contact for work experience programmes as
recommended by Health Education England”, that we do hold the information
that you have requested.

HEE’s lead contact for Work Experience Programmes is Katie Adams – Head of
Diversity, Inclusion and Participation.

As the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) covers recorded information,
we are unable to respond to your other questions under the remit of the
act.
However we have provided the following information from our Diversity,
Inclusion and Participation team, which I hope you will find useful.

* How has COVID-19 impacted your commitment to widening access to working
in the NHS, specifically regarding your commitment to provide work
experience placements for aspiring students?

Covid-19 has not impacted HEE’s commitment to Widening Access and
Participation (WA&P) within the NHS.

HEE has altered the delivery and activity of WA&P work to include:

o National Work Experience (WEX) network
o WEX platforms – sharing lessons learnt and best practice
o Development of Guidance and Toolkits to encompass Covid-19
considerations
o Bringing Trust leads together to support the response to Covid-19
o Lobbying HEE partners to consider the impact of Covid-19 on WA&P
students, contextual offers
o Commissioning Careers taster days
o Exploring opportunities for investment of resources and services to
support virtual WEX through economies of scale

* How has the closing of Fair Train impacted your work experience
accreditation and how do you plan on ensuring consistent work experience
placements are provided for students wanting exposure to the clinical
setting.

This has provided an opportunity for HEE to review past activity, consult
with Trusts across the country and set up a task and finish group to
decide on next steps. Decisions will be made over the coming 4 months to
establish how HEE will support the Quality Assurance of work experience
across the country on a more longer term basis (this related to both
clinical and non-clinical work experience)
