Dear Mr Mulvey

Thank you for your request for information.  Sport England does not award
Olympic or Paralympic funding to basketball as we are only responsible for
grass roots sport. The funding of elite sport is the responsibility of our
sister organisation, UK Sport.  In order to assist your request for
information and save you the trouble of re-submitting your request,  I
have therefore passed your request to UK Sport and you should hear from it
in due course.

In the light of our duties under Section 16 of the Act, I thought it would
be useful to provide you with some information on the significant
investments we do make in the sport of basketball. Sport England is
committed to getting more people playing basketball regularly.  Currently
there are 154,700 people in England who play basketball once a week, every
week.

In January 2013 Sport England increased its investment in  grassroots
basketball from £6.75m by £2.25 million, taking Sport England's total
investment  to £9 million.

Our increased investment includes:

o             England Basketball

                £1.2 million for satellite clubs

                £1.5 million for talented players

o             British Basket League Foundation

£1.9 million for community participation in basketball

o             Reach and Teach

£418,000 investment into the Reach and Teach project

o             £2.8 million is additionally available for the sport of
basketball to get more people playing regularly

We are continuing to invest in areas of delivery where England Basketball
demonstrates particular strengths, notably satellite clubs and talent
development. Basketball exemplified our tough new approach for governing
bodies; we are challenging NGBs to get more people playing their sport by
understanding their markets and developing products which respond to
demand. Where NGBs fail to get more people taking part in community sport,
we will work with other providers such as the British Basketball League
Foundation, who have a strong track record of local delivery.

I hope this explains Sport England's position regarding the sport of
basketball.

Yours sincerely

Dear Alex,

Many thanks for your email to Sport England, which has been passed on to
UK Sport.

UK Sport’s Board made the decision to withdraw funding to Basketball at
their meeting on 31 January. The minutes of that meeting will be published
on our website once they have been approved at the subsequent Board
meeting on 18 March. They will be available here but we do not disclose
them until the Board has signed them off:

You may also be aware that any sport dissatisfied by the recent investment
decisions had the chance to make representations to the UK Sport Board
last week and Basketball did so. The Board will then make a further
decision at their meeting on 18 March. That decision be published on 19
March.

In relation to your second point, as a result of this year’s Annual
Investment Review, 18 sports will see an increase in funding for the Rio
cycle. They are: Boccia, Disability Archery, Disability Cycling,
Disability Table Tennis, Canoeing, Equestrian, Fencing, Gymnastics,
Hockey, Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Para Canoe, Paralympic Sailing, Para
Triathlon, Sailing, Taekwondo, Target Shooting and Triathlon.

This completes our response to your Freedom of Information request. If you
are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the right to
ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be submitted
within two months of the date of this email, and should be directed to the
undersigned.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have
the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner’s Office,
