Wi Fi

The request was successful.

Dear James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,

Yesterday, I visited a friend who is currently receiving treatment in Ward 15. He has been diagnosed with an advanced lung cancer and is finding it difficult to get any relief by way of food, drink or television. He has asked if it is possible to access wi fi, but was told that this is not possible. As his background is IT, the use of a laptop computer would make his hospital stay more bearable.

Could you please respond with either an explanation of why a service which is now commonplace in public spaces, or implementing said service.

Yours faithfully,

Steve Cook

Dear Mr Cook,

In answer to your request regarding Wi-Fi internet access, the James Paget University Hospital is currently part way through implementing a Trust-wide free Wi-Fi service. The final stage is expected to be delivered during June 2018, with the roll out of the new service now likely to be in July 2018, following final connection and testing.

Dear Freedomofinformation,
Thank you very much for your response. Could you please let me know if your plan to provide a Wi Fi service to patients and staff , in July 2018, is on track. My friend is now very seriously ill and I'm sure he would appreciate an update, along with many others.

Yours sincerely,

Steve Cook

Dear Mr Cook

The project to deliver a guest Wi-Fi service across the hospital is now expected to go live in August 2018. It has slipped slightly due to several unexpected technical issues which must be fully resolved and tested before go-live.

As one would expect with a project of this magnitude, the Trust is working closely with its supplier to ensure that the underlying wireless infrastructure over which the guest Wi-Fi service will run is sufficiently robust for a reliable and comprehensive service.

If your friend is in the care of the Trust and does not have provision for internet access (e.g. a personal 4G data plan on his/her wireless device) I would be grateful if you can advise them to raise the matter with their care team.

There are several existing guest Wi-Fi networks in specific areas of the hospital which may be within proximity of their care. We can also explore the opportunity for broadcasting the new guest Wi-Fi service in a specific area to support urgent need for internet access.

The Trust takes the experience of our patients seriously and we will do everything possible to offer improvement where possible.

Yours sincerely
