Whitemoss Landfill, Lancashire, Low Level Nuclear Waste Inventory 2009-2014

The request was partially successful.

Marianne Birkby

Dear Department of Energy and Climate Change,

The UKs first link in the nuclear chain, the Capenhurst Uranium Enrichment plant in Cheshire exports low level radioactive waste to Whitemoss Landfill, Skelmersdale in Lancashire.

What has been the total volume in weight for the years 2009 to 2014?

What has been the total size in cubic metres for the years 2009-2014?

What has been the radionuclide inventory for the years 2009-2014?

Yours faithfully,

Marianne Birkby

The Whitemoss Landfill operators deny that ANY radioactive waste is being accepted at the site. The Local Government Plan 2015 for Chester and Cheshire area clearly states that low level radioactive waste is exported from Capenhurst to Whitemoss. Someone is telling porkies...but who?

Marianne,

The answers to your questions are 0, 0, 0.

The report you refer to has been corrected to say, "Currently low level radioactive waste is exported to Clifton
Marsh Landfill site in Lancashire."

Whitemoss has never accepted any low level radioactive waste from Capenhurst or any other nuclear site.

That is some error by Cheshire County council! Either way, whether the low level waste described is going to Whitemoss or Clifton Marsh...the ONLY designated low level radioactive waste dump in the UK is at Drigg in Cumbria....so why is low level radioactive waste going into other landfill?

Whitemoss Landfill left an annotation ()

Suggest you Google, "Clifton Marsh LLW".

There are at least three landfills that can accept LLW.

Google, "landfills that can accept LLW."

Whitemoss is not one of them.

Until yesterday Whitemoss was the specified landfill for low level radioactive waste, on Cheshire County Councils Local Plan 2015. This is an incredible error that could have led to the "accidental" dumping of low level radioactive wastes at Whitemoss. Will the Landfill operators be taking Cheshire County Council to task for listing Whitemoss as the designated landfill for Capenhurst's Low Level Radioactive wastes ?

Marianne Birkby left an annotation ()

The ONLY landfill that accepts low level radioactive wastes (LLW) is Drigg in Cumbria. Clifton Marsh on the river Ribble accepts lower activity radioactive waste than LLW as does Lillyhall and Kingscliffe. Which is why the listing of Whitemoss as a Low level Radioactive waste dump by Cheshire County Council is so incredible.
