Which college costs have gone up by 20% for the next educational year (2019-2020)

The request was successful.

Dear Gower College Swansea,
The fees for my course next year are going to go up by more than 20%. My course has to cover it's own costs. Which college costs have gone up by 20% for the next educational year (2019-2020)? What is the justification for this large increase?

Yours faithfully,
Stella Elliott

Dear sharon barron,
I am sorry I have made a mathematical mistake in my request: the anticipated rise from last year will by 11%. The costs have gone up by about this amount every year so far since I first enrolled about 5 years ago

Yours sincerely,

Stella Elliott

Dear Stella,

It would help us if you could tell us which course this relates to, and would you like to amend your request to reflect the amendment below?

Dear sharon barron,
Yes please, I would like to amend my request - the figure should read 11% not 20% (both in the header and the text of the message)

Dear sharon barron,

My FOI request should be called
"Which college costs have gone up by 11% or more for the next educational year (2019-2020)?"

The text should read:

Dear Ms Elliott,

I am responding to your Freedom of Information Act request which the College received on 12 June 2019. We have not been able to respond within the 20 days allowed for the response, for which I apologise.

You asked: which college costs have gone up by 20% for the next educational year 2019-20.

The College response is as follows:

The College budgeted expenditure for 2019/20 has increased from £42.4m to £46.1m which is an increase of £3.7m and equates to 8.7%. This includes increases in both staff costs and other operating expenditure. Therefore although no single budget line has increased by 11% or more individually, the cumulative increase across all areas of the budget remains significant.

In general, the costs of the College increase at a greater rate than the increase in funding received from Welsh Government for the main teaching grant. The College seeks to mitigate the increasing costs through a combination of increased income and efficient and effective use of existing resources.

The College aims to grow its income base through a combination of new activity and reviewing the fees for existing activities. It is in this wider context that the College has increased fees by around 10% on existing courses as part of a series of measures to balance the budget for 2019/20.

If you think that the information provided does not meet your request, contact me on 01792 284222 or email or write to me at the main College address. We will then review the response to your request and get back to you within 20 working days. You can also contact the Information Commissioner's Office http://www.ico.gov.uk/, although they expect the internal review to be carried out before receiving a complaint directly.

Yours sincerely,

Sharon Barron
