HM Passport Office Nid oedd gan y wybodaeth y gofynnwyd amdani.

Dear HM Passport Office,

I am very keen to replace the sordid EU passport which represents the forced removal of my British citizenship and replace it with a British passport.

With brexit planned to take place, I would like to make a freedom of information request regarding the issuing of British Passports before the official date we gain independence from the EU and if it has been decided to issue them before independence, whether any firm date has been determined and obviously what it is.

Moreover, will it be possible to change the sordid EU document whilst it is still "valid" or will we have to wait for the EU document to expire?

In short, what is the earliest date I will be able to send away a valid or out of date passport to have it replaced with a British one.

Yours faithfully,

Mike Haseler

PS. Can we have a new design something that stands out!

Dear Mike Haseler

Thank you for your below email. Your request is being handled as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

It is not clear, from your request exactly what information you require. To help us to deal with your request properly, I would be grateful if you could clarify it.

Specifically I am unclear what decision about issuing passports you are referring to as Her Majesty's Passport Office has not stopped issuing passports. You may be referring to the possible future design of the UK passport but I would be grateful if you could confirm please.

Once you provide this information, we will aim to send you a full response to your request within twenty working days.

Yours sincerely

Her Majesty’s Passport Office

Dear HMPO,

thanks for your response. Yes, I am referring to the change of passports that would undoubtedly occur after we leave the EU which presumably will be a single date aka "Independence day". On that day, we will cease being EU citizens and return to being British citizens (or British subjects). I would imagine on that day, our EU passports would become invalid and we will require British passports to get back again.

Unless the government are proposing some form of transnational arrangement whereby we can use either the EU or British passport, it is inevitable that you will make British passports available before independence day.

Given the cycle for renewing passports, I would imagine that this transitional arrangement (perhaps with two passports issued) will start several years before independence day. Which makes it likely that you will start to issue British passports within a few months of activating article 50.

Therefore I was making a request for any information about the transitional arrangements and the date from which the new British Passports would be available.

Yours sincerely,

Mike Haseler

All passports will remain valid to the date of their expiry. From 29 March 2019 British Passports will continue to be issued in their current design but with no reference to the EU on the cover or pages. It’s not until late October 2019 that the new blue passport will be fully rolled out for issue, some will be issued alongside burgundy in a phased in process so you will get one or the other depending on what office has new stock along with old red stock booklets it’s 50/50.
