Additional background information

NICE has been asked to develop a guideline on [2]joint replacement
(primary): hip, knee and shoulder, which is due to publish in March 2020.
This is the first time that we have developed a guideline on this topic
and the guideline is in the early stages of development. All supporting
documents for this project are available via the [3]project documents
tab.

So far, we have produced a guideline scope. The scope explains what the
guideline will and won’t cover. In it, there is a reference to the number
of knee replacement carried out in 2016 which is based on information held
by the National Joint Registry (NJR) for England, Wales, Northern Ireland
and the Isle of Man. You may wish to contact [4]the NJR directly to see if
the information you are looking for is available. Their website explains
the NJR was set up by the Department of Health and Welsh Government to
collect information on all hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder
replacement operations, to monitor the performance of joint replacement
implants and the effectiveness of different types of surgery, improving
clinical standards and benefiting patients, clinicians and the orthopaedic
sector as a whole. Northern Ireland joined in 2013 and the Isle of Man in
2015.

In addition, an organisation called [5]NHS Digital could hold
information relevant to your request as they are responsible for the
collation of information relating to health and social care in England.
They are the national provider of information, data and IT systems for
commissioners, analysts and clinicians in health and social care
in England.

Finally, if you have other questions about the role of NICE or our
guidance, you are welcome to send them to [6][NICE request email]. We aim to
respond to emails within 18 working days. You do not need to submit an
enquiry as a formal Freedom of Information request to us.

I hope this is helpful. Please tell us how we did by completing our
[7]short survey. It will only take you a couple of minutes.

Kind regards

Janet
