Dear Claire McWilliams

REF: Freedom of Information Request - 010711/WEEE

The Trust received a Freedom of Information Act 2000 request from you on
1^st July regarding information on the WEEE Tender.

The following is the answer to the FOI request concerning WEEE Waste:

1. Batteries - there has never been a Request for Tender (RFT) for
their removal from our properties. This is because we have a free
collection service from our central point at Evesham Community Hospital.
We only pay a deposit on the collection boxes. The service is operated by
'Battery Back'.

2. The Trust is not aware of any previous Request for Tenders for the
collection and disposal of WEEE waste. Last year we had one collection
from Evesham and one from the Princess of Wales. We have also used a
company especially set up to recycle as much as possible of the whole unit
as distinct from a disposal company. Costs were comparable for which ever
method we used about £500 per load. This is not sufficient to warrant a
RFT. We do try to encourage the collection of items when a replacement is
purchased. Some redundant medical devices have been sent to auction (bench
top sterilizers for instance). We have a contract with our supplier of
lamps to collect the old units.

3. The Trust is currently putting together a RFT to cover all the
Hazardous Waste from the Trust's properties. This covers Clinical,
offensive, other hazardous wastes (such as Mercury, etc) and WEEE waste.
This RFT may be combined with the other Waste contract for 'Black bag' and
recycling. The RFT's are due to be submitted later this year.

One further point - all of this information is submitted annually to the
ERIC returns, which are available to the public from September onwards.
This gives details of tonnage and costs of all wastes along with a lot of
other information such as Energy, etc.

If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision,
you should write to the Chief Executive, Worcestershire Health and Care
NHS Trust, Isaac Maddox House, Shrub Hill Road, Worcester.

If you are not content with the outcome of the complaint or review you may
apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally,
the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the complaints
procedure provided by the Trust. The Information Commissioner can be
contacted at: The Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely

FOI Coordinator
