FOIA, Carmarthenshire County Council

Dear Mr Allen,

Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 21^st
July 2021 and has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act
2000.

We will respond to your request in the order it was presented using
numbered points as headings for ease of reference.  This response is
primarily in relation to Highways.

1. What method do you use for weed control?

Minimum spot spraying. The primary herbicide product that we use on pubic
highways is Nomix Dual which is applied via a Total Droplet Control (TDC)
system, which is a low volume herbicide application system, combining
pre-mixed herbicides which are easy to use and involve a targeted
application i.e. only applying herbicide to the weeds.

The ready to use herbicide packs connect directly to the applicators which
is a sealed system thus eliminating any risk to the operator from mixing
chemicals and protecting the environment by avoiding spillages.  This
system significantly reduces the risk of contact with the eyes/face of our
operatives due to its low volume application system.

2. Do you use Chemicals?

Yes, as above.

3. If you use chemicals is the council looking to using a more
environmentally friendly method?

With respect to alternative methods of weed control, we have looked at
alternatives, but these have proved to be impractical, ineffective,
expensive, and present more dangers to operatives and the general public.

Use of Nomix Dual enables us to reduce the number of applications per
season, and achieve an overall reduction of Glyphosate applied per season
up to 70% vs. conventional herbicides.

Furthermore, the Council has reduced its annual herbicide usage by 50%
over the past two years and also actively minimise the use of herbicide.
We have also trialled alternative herbicide products, however Dual has
found to be the most effective means of controlling weeds in hard surface
areas.

4. Does the council carry out weed control duties in-house or is this
contracted out?

In-house.

5. (If contracted out) who is the contractor responsible for Weed control
duties?

Not applicable.

6. Does the council have a budget for a chemical free alternative?

No, part of overarching budget.

7. Contact details for the person(s) responsible for managing weed control
within the council

Contact details for the heads of each service area are published by the
Council on its website:
