Wardens on Hammersmith Bridge
Dear Transport for London,
I have read reports from Hammersmith and Fulham Council that TfL hired wardens to observe the size of vehicles that cross Hammersmith Bridge. This is because heavy vehicles such as lorries and two-decker buses were banned from using the bridge, as strengthening work is needed to make it safe.
Can I please ask TfL how many wardens it hired to observe traffic on Hammersmith Bridge in each of the following years: 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019.
Can I please ask TfL how much money it spent on hiring wardens to observe traffic on Hammersmith Bridge in each of the following years: 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019.
Yours faithfully,
Owen Sheppard

Dear Mr Sheppard
Our Ref: FOI-0245-1920
Thank you for your request received on 23 April 2019 asking for
information about wardens on Hammersmith Bridge.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can
confirm we hold some of the information you require.
TfL has paid for the deployment of marshals on Hammersmith Bridge since 14
November 2016 to control the flow of buses crossing the bridge, allowing
only one bus in each direction on the bridge at a time. This was due to a
weight restriction applied to the bridge due to structural limitations
before the bridge was closed in early April 2019. We do not hold
information prior to November 2016.
Five staff were deployed on the bridge (four customer services assistants
and one supervisor). This allowed us to ensure that there were always two
people on duty on each side of the bridge to manage the flow of buses and
deal with customer queries. All staff were equipped with emergency radios.
The cost for staffing Hammersmith Bridge is recorded in four weekly
periods. Please find the breakdown we hold below:
