Viva success/failure rate for phd students

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, University of Bath should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear University of Bath,

I request the following. For each school within the university and for each academic year from 2006 to 2016 please provide:

1) The total number of viva examinations that took place for that school's students for that year.
2) The total number of viva examinations in which a student successfully passed.
3) Total that failed (please count conversion to MSc as a failure).

Please send me the above in .csv format.

Yours faithfully,
Michael Lee

Dear Freedom of Information,

I apologise but I need to make the following clarifications with respect to my request:

1) Please only consider statistics regarding PhD students and disregard any other form of award that undergoes viva examinations (e.g. EngD, etc).
2) Please count any resubmission result as part of its own category and do not include it in the failure category.

I'm aware that this changes the nature of my request somewhat. Please let me know if this is possible.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Lee

Dear John Evans,

Would it be possible to see a breakdown of the overall thesis outcome for the years I stated? I understand this is somewhat different to my initial request and will make a new formal one if needs be.

Its just that in certain instances where I've requested this information from Universities and they've had difficulties similar to the ones you've stated in your reply:
"In respect of questions 2 and 3, examiners’ recommendations following vivas are submitted to
faculty boards of studies for approval, and in some situations their reports will not indicate
whether a viva has been recommended as failed, as opposed to both the thesis and oral
examination"

The other universities have opted to send the overall thesis results rather then the result of the examination. Please let me know if this would be a reasonable request to make.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Lee
