Use of ANPR cameras in petrol station forecourts

The request was successful.

Dear Association of Chief Police Officers,

Please can you provide information regarding the use of ANPR cameras in petrol garage forecourts, and other entrances / forecourts to be found in motorway service stations.

In particular I would like to know what databases the cameras are linked to, what crimes are recorded on these databases, whether all vehicles movements are stored, how long the information is stored for, and finally who has the authority to mine the database to see the past movements of innocent motorists.

Thankyou,

Yours faithfully,

Alex Tabor

These are the same problems that people face when trying to use the published contact email addresses to communicate directly with ACPO.

Sent request to The Association of Chief Police Officers of England, Wales and Northern Ireland again, using a new contact address.

ACPO Vicky Reay,

Dear Mr Tabor,

Thank you for you for your e-mail requesting information regarding the use of ANPR cameras in petrol station forecourts and please accept our apologies for the delay in responding - I am afraid we didn't receive your original e-mails but please see the response below from the office that deals with ANPR issues:

ACPO is not responsible for the use of ANPR by private sector organisations such as petrol filling stations and motorway service areas. As such, we have no information in relation to the length of time for which data is retained or who has access to the data.

In some locations, the police take a feed from privately operated ANPR cameras and use these to match against databases of vehicles known to be involved in crime. In these cases, no data is fed back to the private operator, and the data may only be accessed by authorised police personnel in relation to criminal investigations. It has been agreed with the Information Commissioner's Office that the police may retain ANPR data for up to two years.

Kind regards,

Vicky Reay
ACPO
Acting Office Manager
