Use of animals of research

The request was refused by Queen Mary University of London.

Dear Queen Mary, University of London,

I write in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

For the purposes of clarification, by 'research’ I mean any activity which falls within the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (“ASPA”) and ‘breeding’ as any activity in relation to acting as a Designated Breeding & Supply Establishment (“DBSE”) under ASPA.

Please supply details of the following:

1) By species, the number of animals used by Queen Mary for research in 2012

2) By species, the number of animals bred by Queen Mary for research in 2012

3) By species, the number of animals supplied externally to Queen Mary for research in 2012

4) By species, the number of animals currently held by Queen Mary for research purposes

I understand that, under the Act, I am entitled to a response within 20 days.

I would be grateful if you could confirm you have received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours faithfully,

Tom King

Queen Mary University of London

We acknowledge receipt of your request and will respond as soon as we can.

Queen Mary University of London

Dear Mr. King

Thank you for your email of 1st August requesting information about the
use of animals in research.

I would refer you to our previous responses on this subject:
[1]https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/n...
[2]https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/u...
I'm afraid that, although Queen Mary holds this information, it cannot be
supplied to you. This is because, as explained in previous similar
replies, this information is not held centrally and to collate it would
exceed the appropriate limit as defined by the Freedom of Information and
Data Protection (Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004. For your information
this is £450, calculated as the estimated cost of one person spending 3.5
working days in determining whether the information is held, then
locating, retrieving and extracting the information. Section 12 of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 therefore makes provision for public
authorities to refuse such requests.

Please accept this as a refusal notice.

If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask the College to
conduct a review of this decision.  To do this, please contact the College
in writing (including by fax, letter or email), describe the original
request, explain your grounds for dissatisfaction, and include an address
for correspondence.  You have 40 working days from receipt of this
communication to submit a review request.  When the review process has
been completed, if you are still dissatisfied, you may ask the Information
Commissioner to intervene. Please see [3]www.ico.gov.uk for details.

Yours sincerely

Dear Mr Smallcombe,

You have previously been able to provide information on the number of animals held by QMUL (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/n...), would it be possible to obtain an updated figure?

Yours faithfully,

Tom King

Dear Mr. King

The request you have directed me to states that Queen Mary was unable to
provide even an approximate figure and unfortunately this remains the case
for the reasons explained.

Yours sincerely
