University emissions information

We're waiting for Theresa Shotton to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear University of Manchester,

I am studying how Universities have reduced their CO2 emissions.

1) I have looked at the most recent 2018/19 Estates HESA data for “Table 3 - Emissions and waste” and field: “Total scope 1 and 2 emission baseline for 2005 (tonnes CO2e)”.

This field shows a total of 80,550 CO2e for the 2005 emission baseline.

2) In this University document, the emissions are shown at 80,550 for 2007/8.
http://documents.manchester.ac.uk/displa...
3) A BriteGreen report from April 2014 shows a baseline figure of 62,066 CO2e.
http://www.eauc.org.uk/file_uploads/brit...

Can the University please say whether the 80,550 figure includes the 2011/12 onwards adjustment.
An adjustment was needed as an alternative Defra measure of equivalent carbon dioxide (C02e) was applied past 2011/12. This change accounts for additional Greenhouse Gases, including CH4 and N20 and not just CO2 pre 2011/12.

Why is the University using the 2007/8 baseline figure for monitoring changes in emissions, when all other Universities are using the 2005/6 emissions as a baseline?

What was the Scope 1 and 2 emissions figure in 2005/6 for Manchester University?

Yours faithfully,

Theresa Shotton

Dear Theresa,

Thank you for your request for information received by The University of
Manchester on 24 September 2020. The University has now considered your
request and the information you are seeking can be found below.

1) I have looked at the most recent 2018/19 Estates HESA data for “Table 3
- Emissions and waste” and field: “Total scope 1 and 2 emission baseline
for 2005 (tonnes CO2e)”.

This field shows a total of 80,550 CO2e for the 2005 emission baseline.

2) In this University document, the emissions are shown at 80,550 for
2007/8.

3) A BriteGreen report from April 2014 shows a baseline figure of 62,066
CO2e.

[2]http://www.eauc.org.uk/file_uploads/brit...

Can the University please say whether the 80,550 figure includes the
2011/12 onwards adjustment.

Yes

An adjustment was needed as an alternative Defra measure of equivalent
carbon dioxide (C02e) was applied past 2011/12. This change accounts for
additional Greenhouse Gases, including CH4 and N20 and not just CO2 pre
2011/12.

Why is the University using the 2007/8 baseline figure for monitoring
changes in emissions, when all other Universities are using the 2005/6
emissions as a baseline?

Using 2007/08 as a baseline year (opposed to 2005/06) was agreed with
HEFCE. In 2004, The University of Manchester Institute of Science and
Technology (UMIST) merged with The Victoria University to produce The
University of Manchester. We could not substantiate data for 2005.

What was the Scope 1 and 2 emissions figure in 2005/6 for Manchester
University?

As above, we could not substantiate the data for this year due to merger,
therefore do not have a figure.

I trust this information is of use to you.

Kind regards,
