University emissions information

We're waiting for Theresa Shotton to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear University of Warwick,

I am studying how Universities have reduced their CO2 emissions.

1) I have looked at the most recent 2018/19 Estates HESA data for “Table 3 - Emissions and waste” and field: “Total scope 1 and 2 emission baseline for 2005 (tonnes CO2e)”.

This field shows a total of 44,262 CO2e for the 2005 emission baseline.

2) However, Warwick Universitiy’s 2020 Carbon Management Implementation Plan says on page 19 that the 2005 baseline is 46,540.

3) A BriteGreen report from April 2014 also shows a baseline figure of 47,288 CO2e.

Can the University please say which of the 1) – 3) 2005 baseline figures is the correct CO2e figure and that this figure includes the 2011/12 onwards adjustment.

An adjustment was needed as an alternative Defra measure of equivalent carbon dioxide (C02e) was applied past 2011/12. This change accounts for additional Greenhouse Gases, including CH4 and N20 and not just CO2 pre 2011/12.

Yours faithfully,

Theresa Shotton

Thank you for your email dated 24 September 2020 requesting information
from the University of Warwick under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Please find below your request and the University’s response.

FOI Request
I am studying how Universities have reduced their CO2 emissions.

1)     I have looked at the most recent 2018/19 Estates HESA data for

3)     A BriteGreen report from April 2014 also shows a baseline figure of
47,288 CO2e. [2]http://www.eauc.org.uk/file_uploads/brit...

Can the University please say which of the 1) – 3) 2005 baseline figures
is the correct CO2e figure and that this figure includes the 2011/12
onwards adjustment.

An adjustment was needed as an alternative Defra measure of equivalent
carbon dioxide (C02e) was applied past 2011/12. This change accounts for
additional Greenhouse Gases, including CH4 and N20 and not just CO2 pre
2011/12.

The correct 2005/06 baseline figure for University Scope 1 and 2 carbon
emissions is 44,262 CO2e. The other figures quoted are taken from older
sources prior to a re-baselining exercise following clarification from
DEFRA on the application of historical grid electricity factors. The
correct figure is also shown on the University’s Carbon Performance
website, which will be updated imminently with 2019/20 figures:
[3]https://warwick.ac.uk/about/environment/....

All grid electricity emissions (current and historic) are calculated based
on published CO2 “equivalent” conversion factors, which incorporate CH4
and N2O impacts.

I trust that this information will be helpful to you. Should you require
any clarification, please contact me.

Yours sincerely,
