University emissions information
Dear University of Southampton,
I am studying how Universities have reduced their CO2 emissions.
1) I have looked at the most recent 2018/19 Estates HESA data for “Table 3 - Emissions and waste” and field: “Total scope 1 and 2 emission baseline for 2005 (tonnes CO2e)”.
This field shows a total of 33,000 CO2e for the 2005 emission baseline.
2) However, Southampton Universitiy’s Cabon 2011 Management Plan says that “In 2005/06, the University's carbon emissions were 51,878 tonnes”.
https://www.southampton.ac.uk/~assets/do...
3) In the 2019/20 sustainability report, the University reports a 2005 baseline of 31,983 CO2e for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
https://www.southampton.ac.uk/~assets/do...
4) Additionally, the 2017/18 Estates HESA data for “Table 3 - Emissions and waste” and field: Total scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions (Kg CO2e) shows 26,861 CO2e.
The University 2019/20 sustainability report, shows for 2017/18, 32,208 tonnes of CO2 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Questions
a) For points 1) – 3), is there information to show why for Scope 1 and 2 three different 2005 baselines: 33,000, 51,878 and 31,983 CO2e tonnes are used in different places?
Which is the correct baseline?
b) For point 4) why are there two different figures for the 2017/18 actual Scope 1 and 2 emissions?
Which is the correct one?
c) Is the 2018/19 Scope 1 and 2 emissions figure in the HESA submission of 23,952 CO2e tonnes correct?
Yours faithfully,
Theresa Shotton
