Dear Transport for London,
I would like some technical drawings of the 1938 tube stock (1938-1987), 1937 O/P stock (1937-1981), 1959/1962 Tube Stock (1858-2000) and if possible Standard Stock (1923-1964), Also A,C and D stock This would be views of the front of the train and the side. Could these include dimensions and any other technical information about the train.
Dear Mr Hook
Your enquiry has been forwarded to us in the TfL Corporate Archives team
by our colleagues in FOI as we believe we are best placed to assist.
We have a quantity of tube stock drawings within our permanent collection
and attached you will find an exported list from our catalogue. Our
catalogue is available online if you would like to cross check our search
or run additional search terms that may not have occurred to us:
We searched from “tube stock” and then narrowed that search for “drawing*”
Most of the items from the attached list are only available in their
original format (scanned or digital surrogates do not exist) so access
must be in person via our public search room, located within our head
office building in Stratford in East London. As our collections are stored
off site (in salt mines in Cheshire) we need you to provide us with a list
of the items you would like to consult, including the ArchiveRefNum, title
and covering dates for the items, for example:
ArchiveRefNum Title Date_Of_Document
London Transport (LT): Director of
LT000189/024/002 Mechanical Engineering Design Office 05-Feb-82
(Rail): General Arrangement of 1983 Tube
Stock (TS) Auto Coupler
We can then arrange delivery to Stratford and provide you with a list of
our next available research appointments.
There is one item that may be of interest that we do have available
digitally, via our recently launched online digital collections platform:
ArchiveRefNum Title Date_Of_Document Description
1959/1962, 1960, dimensioned drawings
1967, 1972 Mark I and specification
LT001484/012 and Mark II Tube 1959-1972 sheets for Underground
Stock, 1973 Tube rolling stock. Second
Stock, A60/62, C 69 copy does not contain
Surface Stock information for 1972 or
1973 Tube Stock.
The following link will take you directly to the relevant page:
If you would like to explore the platform and see what else we have
available as digitised or born digital items the main page for the
collection website is: https://tfl-2.access.preservica.com/
If you navigate to the bottom of the page and select the “How to use and
search the website pages” you will find navigation information and
supporting demonstration videos.
In addition to the items in our custody we would also recommend that you
have a look at the online collections portal for the London Transport
Museum. They do hold an extensive drawings collection to help with the
maintenance and upkeep of vehicles:
A search of their drawings collection for tube stock returns 11,655 items.
A handful are digitised so if you filter to include “has images” you will
be able to see 37 plans from home. Access to, and information about the
others would need to be directed to their enquiry service:
If you have any further questions or would like to book a research
appointment please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

TfL Corporate Archives re-opened to visitors in April. We do have a
backlog of research visits to work through. We will also be working in a
completely new environment with new working practices. Our appointment
availability will therefore remain limited for the time being and we
request you remain patient as we work to see how we can improve this.
Dear Mr Hook
