The Central Gurdwara (British Isles) London Khalsa Jatha (258324) and The Virdee Foundation (1144310)

We're waiting for Ali Ahmad to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Charity Commission for England and Wales,

The Virdee Foundation, chaired by Peter Virdee has been allegedly been donating money to the Central Gurdwara in Shepherds Bush. Both of these organisations are registered charities.

We have serious concerns, which we raised via your website, but these have not been investigated. Hitherto, you have failed to respond to any of our FOI requests, and I fear that there may be reasons for this that are not in the public interest.

A judge on 19th July 2021 ordered the extradition of Peter Virdee from the UK to Germany to face fraud charges that he ran a criminal gang that stole 125 million Euro. We feel that this should be sufficient reason for a detailed investigation into the dealings of the Central Gurdwara and its trustees and the alleged donations made to it by the Virdee Foundation.

Please can you answer the following question under the FOI Act:

1) Will the Charity Commission investigate whether the trustees of the Gurdwara have received gifts from the Virdee Foundation, which include cars?

2) Why has the Central Gurdwara not provided accounts showing the donations made to it by the Virdee Foundation?

Yours faithfully,

Ali Ahmad

DoNotReply, Charity Commission for England and Wales

Dear Ali Ahmed
RE: - THE CENTRAL GURDWARA (BRITISH ISLES) LONDON KHALSA JATHA: 258324
Thank you for your email of 29 December 2021 in regard to the above named
charity.  Please accept our apologies for the delay in replying.
When a concern is raised with the Commission about a charity, we assess
all of the information available to decide what steps to take, the issues
you have raised have been considered against the [1]Charity Commission
Regulatory and Risk Framework.
Our role is to ensure that charities are accountable, well-run, and meet
their legal obligations.  We do this by providing regulatory advice and
guidance.  We may also intervene in matters where there is serious risk of
significant harm to, or abuse of, charities, their beneficiaries and/or
assets including reputation.
When making our decisions, we consider the issue, the risk involved to the
charity, its beneficiaries and/or assets and those who come into contact
with the charity. We also consider the likely impact of our involvement,
and we take action where it is proportionate to do so.
On this occasion, having assessed the concerns you have raised against our
risk framework, we will not be contacting the charity. It is important to
note that your concerns will remain on the charity’s record and will
inform future decisions should further information be received.
Please note it is not the Commission’s practice to keep those who raise
concerns informed or updated. However, if we require any additional
information, we will contact you and if new information comes to light, we
will continue to assess this in line with our risk framework.
Further information regarding the types of issues that fall within our
remit can be found in [2]Complaints about charities.
We note that you have also sent an email in regard to your Freedom of
Information requests on 29 December 2021, and this is currently being
dealt with by the relevant team within the Commission.
We would like to thank you for the time you have taken to contact us.  By
taking time to raise this issue, you are helping the Charity Commission
build and inspire trust in the sector.
Yours sincerely
