Swindon Baptist Tabernacle

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Magnus Ponsonby-Talbot

Dear Swindon Borough Council,

SBC purchased the stone frontage of the former Baptist Tabernacle, shamefully demolished in 1978, in September 2007 at a cost to the public purse of £349,000 (as set out in your response to FOI101000238245).

Please provide me with the most recent plans the council possess for reassembling these stones and incorporating them in some other development. I am aware there have been a number of false starts over the years.

Please also provide details of exactly how much of the portico was retained, was it simply the columns or was it the pediment too?

Yours faithfully,

Magnus Ponsonby-Talbot

Dear Swindon Borough Council,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Swindon Borough Council's handling of my FOI request 'Swindon Baptist Tabernacle'.

I believe SBC have been disingenuous in their handling of this request.

As far back as 2009 the idea of incorporating these stones into another building has been mooted, and has been widely reported in the press that the Council were actively pursuing options. One such option was with a company called Modus, which went into administration so sadly the venture went nowhere.

Even if there are no current plans (which was not my question), this then might be the most recent, potentially, and I would be very surprised if a copy of those plans didn't rest somewhere in the Council.

I would ask you therefore to revisit my request.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/s...

Yours faithfully,

Magnus Ponsonby-Talbot

Dear Magnus Ponsonby-Talbot,

Ref FOI0002193 Freedom of Information Request for a Review FIR000022

The purpose of  this process is to allow for a full review of the response
that you received.

I have asked the service area concerned to revisit the request and the
response we sent you.

The original request and response was as follows;

Please provide me with the most recent plans the council possess for
reassembling these stones and incorporating them in some other
development. I am aware there have been a number of false starts over the
years.

Response: There are currently no plans, so we do not hold any information
in response to your request.

Please also provide details of exactly how much of the portico was
retained, was it simply the columns or was it the pediment too?

Response: The Portico stones include the principal elements of the
Pediment.

You responded as follows;

might be the most recent, potentially, and I would be very surprised if a

I have been advised the development you refer to as you say has lapsed. If
you enter S/02/1649 where prompted on the link below you can view the
details of the planning application
[1]https://pa1.swindon.gov.uk/publicaccess/...

Links to  S/02/1649 | The redevelopment of land bounded by Regent Street,
Temple Street, Commercial Road and Havelock Street for mixed use
development comprising of shop units (Class A1), professional and
financial units (Class A2), restaurants and cafes (Class A3), leisure uses
(Class D2), offices (Class B1), residential, car parking, servicing, plant
and highways improvements to Commercial Road, the refurbishment and
partial re-development of the existing Brunel Shopping Centre and
improvements to Wharf Green. | Land Bounded By Temple Street/Commercial
Road/Havelock Street/Regent Street Swindon

There were discussions about their inclusion as part of this proposal. The
key point is that these plans are no longer in place. This planning
consent has lapsed. It goes back to our original responses - there are no
current plans.

I hope this clarifies the Council’s position in response to your request.

If you are not content with my response you still have the opportunity to
refer the matter to the Information Governance Manager
[2][email address].

Or the ICO.

It is unlikely that the ICO would deal with the matter unless you had
exhausted the Council’s review process first.

If you have any queries about this email please contact me as detailed,
quoting the above reference number.
