Student and Staff Numbers by Headcount and FTE at Cardiff University 2017/18

We're waiting for Nicky Michaels to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Cardiff University,

I seek figures relating to staff and student numbers in relation to the 2018-19 academic year. A request has been made by Phee Lowe in relation to seeking complete figures for the 2017-18 academic year at Cardiff University (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/s...).

The present FOI request is identical but seeks the same information for the 2018-19 academic year. I would be grateful if you could provide this information according to the categories below, and via an excel worksheet as an attachment to your email response (attempts to respond via regular email with tables embedded will result in a jumbled format on the Whatdotheyknow.com site).

1. STUDENT NUMBERS – SCHOOL LEVEL (2018/19)
Please provide:-
(a) the total number (i.e. headcount) of *UG part-time* students registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(b) the total number of *UG full-time* students registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(c) *FTE total of all UG students* registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(d) the total number (i.e. headcount) of *PGT part-time* students registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(e) the total number of *PGT full-time students* registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(f) *FTE total of all PGT students* registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(g) the total number (i.e. headcount) of PGR part-time students registered within each school (please breakdown by school);
(h) the total number of PGR full-time students registered within each school (please breakdown by school).
(j) FTE total of all PGR student registered within each school (please breakdown by school).

2. ACADEMIC STAFF NUMBERS – SCHOOL LEVEL (2018/19)
Please provide -
(a) the total number of academic staff employed within each school by *head-count*;
(b) the total number of academic staff employed within each school by *FTE (Full time equivalent)* (rather than head-count).

These FTE figures should then be separately broken down and sub-categorised by:
(i) the number of academic FTE staff employed on *research only* contracts (so not T&S nor T&R); [again please breakdown by school]
(ii) the number of academic FTE staff employed on *teaching and research* contracts; [again please breakdown by school]
(iii) the number of academic FTE staff employed on *teaching and scholarship* contracts; [again please breakdown by school]
(iv) the number of FTE staff in each school who are working at Cardiff University providing teaching or teaching-related work (e.g. provision of lecture, seminar, or other teaching-related functions) but who are *not employed on research only, teaching and research, or teaching and scholarship pathways*.

[Note of clarification for Q2(iv): Individuals under this category may or may not be included within payroll, and may provide work for the school, across a range of contractual or quasi-contractual types. The aim of this question is to get a comprehensive account of the numbers of people *working at* (as perhaps distinct from employed at) a Higher Education Institution such as Cardiff. In that respect, individuals under this category can be part of arrangements that are made for hourly paid tutors, but so too can they include PGR students who are on ‘agreements’ to provide/deliver teaching/teaching related functions. *If you are unable to provide an FTE number for this specific point, please provide a headcount number instead (but please stipulate this accordingly).]

Please note that a member of staff reported under one category (e.g. (i)) should not also be reported under a further category). The aim here is to elicit information that captures the numbers of all staff working at a Higher Education Institution (whilst recognising that not all staff who do work within an HEI are officially regarded as ‘employed’).

3. SUPPORT/ADMINISTRATION/PROFESSIONAL SERVICES – SCHOOL LEVEL (2018/19)
With respect to support staff/professional services, please provide school level staff figures -
(a) expressed as a headcount (reported by each school).
(b) expressed as FTE (reported by each school).

4. STAFF NUMBERS 2018/19: CENTRAL UNIVERSITY (ACADEMICS & ACADEMIC RELATED STAFF)
Where administrative and/or academic staff are unattached to a specific school, but
are employed to work within the Central University, please detail by each section /unit /relevant central university department:
(i) numbers of academic staff by headcount;
(ii) the number of academic staff by FTE;
(iii) number of academic-related staff by headcount;
(iii) the number of academic-related staff by FTE.

5. RECONCILIATION – OVERALL STAFF NUMBERS WORKING AT CARDIFF FOR 2018/19
Please provide the overall staff numbers working at the University for 2018/19 by headcount and separately by FTE. [Please note that the totals of Questions 2 to 4 should align with these figures. Where they do not, please provide a note which highlights why (and which specific categories of staff) the figure for overall staff number falls short of /exceeds those figures provided in response to Questions 2 to 4.]

Thank you so much for your assistance in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Nicky Michaels

InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Nicky

Further to your recent email, please see our response below:

The figures previously sent to you were from headcounts of students taking
courses within each of the schools. As we have modular courses, a student
may be simultaneously registered in multiple schools. They were also
recorded as to whether they were full time or part time. Therefore a full
time student taking courses in Business and French would be recorded as
full time in both subjects and the figures cannot be added up to give an
overall number of students. HESA data is quite different. It calculates
the proportion of students (FTE) on each module. The latter version sent
drew on our consolidated and validated figures and a full explanation of
how it was created and completely correlated with that published by HESA
and the correct data used for SSRs.

We trust this clarifies the matter for you.

Kind regards
