Statistics of detainees in UK immigration removal centres 2017

The request was partially successful.

Dear Home Secretary Amber Rudd,

I am requesting details of immigrants currently being detained in the UK's 'immigration removal centres' (IRC) and prisons.

The information I need is as follows:

1. As of June 2017 (or the latest recent date), how many IRCs are in the UK?
a) How many people are being detained in IRCs?
b) How many immigrants are being held in prisons in the UK under Immigration Act powers ?

2. Of those being detained, I would like to know the following:
a) how old are they?
b) what is their gender?
c) what is their country of origin?
d) how many have sought asylum?

3. How long is the average time spent in an IRC?

Please send me this information as soon as you can.

Yours faithfully,

Lydia Morrish

Dear DS FOI,

Thank you for your response to my FOI request regarding immigration removal centres.

When you say there are nine IRCs, is this not including STHFs? Multiple sources show there are 11 IRCs, including the Government website (https://www.gov.uk/immigration-removal-c...).

Regarding your decision not to communicate information about current detainees with me is quite unsatisfactory. Whilst you are deserving in your wish to want to publish full statistics for the quarter in your report in August, it does appear to be doing the public a disservice that you cannot communicate the exact number of detainees in IRCs at any particular date offered to you – the one I gave being 30th June 2017.

Might I request a review of this decision, based on the fact that data of detainees should be recorded and available at all times during the year for journalists like myself wishing to inform the public at times which may not coordinate with government reports.

Yours sincerely,

Lydia Morrish
