I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request regarding
Staff on Zero-Hours Contracts at Sheffield Hallam University with Reduced
Hours of Work and Wages During Covid-19 at Sheffield Hallam University.
Please see the information below in response to your request.

 

o Please provide details of the number of employees on zero-hours
contracts, who have worked at the University for at least one year,
who have been provided fewer hours of work in the first semester of
the current academic year (2020-2021) compared to the same semester in
the previous academic year (2019-2020).
o Please also provide details of the number of employees on zero-hours
contracts, who have worked at the University for at least one year,
whose total earnings have been lower in the first semester of the
current academic year (2020-2021) than they were in the same semester
of the previous academic year (2019-2020).
o Please provide a breakdown of the above by type of staff, e.g.
academic, administrative, IT, disability support workers, security,
estates, catering, library, other.

 

o Staff on zero-hours contracts are permanent employees who work
variable hours. They are issued with a 'zero-hours' contract at the
start of their employment.
o Where a job role does not match the categories you have specified we
have included them in ‘other’.  Currently ‘other’ zero-hours job roles
may include sports coaches, group fitness instructors. 
o The information provided is based on the hours that have been claimed
for and paid in the August to December 2019 and August to December
2020 payroll periods.
o The figures provided are the number of staff employed at 1^st August
who were still employed and paid in the December 2020 monthly payroll.
Any staff member who may have left their role between the start of the
academic year and the present may not have had the opportunity to work
the same number of hours as they did in 2019/20 and are therefore not
included.
o The figures are provided on a head count basis i.e. an individual with
more than one contract will only be counted once, not per contract.
o Staff not included in the figures below i.e. those who have not worked
fewer hours or received lower earnings, may have worked more hours/had
higher earnings in 2020 or had no hours/earnings in either 2019 or
2020.
