Speach and language therapy

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust,

I would like to ask the following questions under Freedom of
Information (FOI) legislation:

1 ) What percentage of clients with autism or other developmental
disabilities receiving speech and language therapy (SLT) in the
area are offered intensive interaction therapy ?

2) Why is intensive interaction offered eg upon what evidence base
do you rely for offering intensive interaction to these clients ?

3) If other interventions are used by your Speech and language
therapy service could you please list them?

Yours faithfully,

Sean Pogson

Dear Mr Pogson,

FOI ref:  2015/1342

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) does not hold the
information that you have requested in an easily retrievable format. The
Trust has a number of different teams across different boroughs who would
provide intensive interaction therapy (IIT).  This information is not
centrally collated, and one team (Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale
Children’s SLT) has reported that – depending on the time period you would
like us to search –  for them alone to provide the number of patients who
had been offered IIT would take in excess of 18hrs.  It would also take
them in excess of 18hrs to provide information regarding other
interventions that have been provided by their SLT team – again depending
on the time period you would like us to search.  For both questions, the
team would need to manually review patient records, and this manually
review is likely to engage S.12 as the 18hr appropriate limit would be
exceeded.

Furthermore, I can advise that we do not hold any recorded information
that would answer Q.2 as it stands.  It is a very narrow question that
almost amounts to a request for expression of opinion which would not be
valid under the FOIA (under the FOIA you can only request recorded
information held by the Trust).  I can advise that intensive interaction
has been a widely used approach for many years to improve social
interaction and communication and is used particularly with children and
adults at early stages of interaction.  Furthermore, consistent practice
based evidence (PBE) has been gathered nationally through baseline and
reassessment that supports the continued use of this therapy. There is
also a large body of published evidence for the use of this therapy
(evidence based practice – EBP).

Considering the above information, could you please clarify your request.

Yours sincerely
