Social workers or senior practioners

We're waiting for miss smith to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Staffordshire County Council,

How many staff have you got working for you as senior practitioners within child protection who carry out the duties of a protected title ?

How many of these are required to be registered by the hcpc ?

What is the difference between the role of a senior practitioner and a social worker ?

Who is the regulating body who senior practioners are held accountable to ?

Yours faithfully,

miss smith

Dear Miss Smith

The service area reports that 94 senior practitioners in Families First, all of whom are registered with the HCPC.

Senior Practitioners are social workers and as such have to be registered with the HCPC to practice in their social work field. All social worker and thus senior practitioners have to be registered social workers in Families First. The HCPC is the governing body of social workers and as such social workers/Senior Practitioners have to pay to register with the HCPC and prove their fitness to practice upon registration and renewal.

The difference between Senior Practitioners roles can vary across the authority and within different teams depending on the teams function. However, Senior Practitioners have generally undertaken additional training, with some of them being Practice Educators as well ( i.e. able to mentor and assess student social workers on placements). Senior Practitioners tend to manage family support workers on some teams and or manage more complex and in depth cases, due to their experience at managing complexity and risk associated with this.

Senior Practitioners generally have been in practice for several years before becoming a Senior Practitioner, and to become a Senior Practitioner a social worker as to apply for a Senior Practitioner post.

If you have any queries or require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
