Dear Royal Museums Greenwich,

I would like to know how many units of single use plastics and other single use disposable items have been purchased in the last 3 years for each of the museums you manage, namely: National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House.

In particular, could you please state the total number, i.e individual units (broken down by calendar year and individual museum as listed above) for items including:

-single use coffee cups
-single use plastic containers
-single use plastic cutlery
-any other single use plastic items
and
- Disposable plates

Finally, could you please outline what, if any, recycling facilities, practises or procedures you have at the Royal Observatory cafe.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Beardmore

In addition, RMG themselves have ordered 9,000 plastic cups over the 3
years. For information in 2019 we have changed to ordering paper cups.

The Museum splits waste into differing streams for recycling purposes.
Where practicable bins are provided for dry recycling (cans, cardboard,
glass, and plastic) and general waste. The process is also in place for
the ROG café operation as well as across the Museum estate. At the main
Museum, where space allows, we also split out kitchen food waste as a
separate stream. The grounds team undertake a composting programme for
garden waste independently from to other waste streams. Food waste is not
composted on site due to the risk of vermin.

I hope that you are happy with the service you have received in relation
to your request but if not and you wish to make a complaint you should in
the first instance write to me, Jane Costantini, Governance and Museum
Records Manager.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint, you may apply
directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. (Generally, the
Information Commissioner cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted
the above complaints procedure provided by the National Maritime Museum.)

The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:
