Dear Mr Johnson,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request regarding
funding sources at Sheffield Hallam University. Please see the information
below in response to your request.

Could you please confirm the percentage of overall funding received by
Sheffield Hallam University that is from UK public sources and also from
non-public sources  during the current academic year (2020-21) and, if
possible, also the two previous academic years (2019-2020 and 2018-2019).

o Please see tab 1 of the attached spreadsheet for academic years
2019/20 and 2018/19.  The information requested is not held for the
current academic year 2020/21 as the year has not ended and the data
has not been collated.

Of the overall income Sheffield Hallam University receives from student
tuition fees, could you please confirm the percentage that comes from (a)
self-funded students, (b) international students, and (c) loans from UK
government agencies. If possible, could you provide figures for the
current academic year and also the previous two academic years.

o As above, please note that the this information is not currently held
for academic year 2020/21.
o Please see tab 3 of the attached spreadsheet.
o For further information on the 2018/19 income from tuition fees please
see page 90 of the 2018/19 Annual Report and Financial Statement
(attached). The 2019/20 ARFS will be published here when finalised:
[1]https://www.shu.ac.uk/about-us/governanc....

Could you also please confirm the actual numbers and percentage of staff
at Sheffield Hallam University deemed to be publicly funded during the
current academic year (2020-21) and, if possible, also the two previous
academic years (2019-2020 and 2018-2019). Could you also provide a
breakdown by type of staff (e.g. academic, administrative, IT, disability
support workers, security, estates, catering, library, other).

o To collate the information on the use of public funding and identify
the funding used for staff costs for all University employees would
exceed the appropriate cost limit as stipulated by Section 12 of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000. The appropriate cost limit is set at
£450, or 18 hours of staff time.

o Information on whether a job role is publicly funded is not held
centrally on the University’s central HR system nor centrally within
the Finance Directorate. Each College and Professional Services
Directorate would be required to analyse and interrogate information
held in their respective budgets to identify funding types and how
that funding was allocated e.g. to staffing costs.
o In some circumstances, public funding/grants could be held centrally
and used along with other funds to allocate budget to specific areas.
In these instances budget would be allocated based on various income
streams and it would not be possible to breakdown and apportion a
level of public funding to staff.  Where public funding is identified
it would not always be possible to identify whether it was used for
staffing costs or other expenses.
o Further information on the sources of the University’s income can be
found on tab 2 of the attached spreadsheet.

This concludes the University’s response to your request. Should you be
dissatisfied with how the University has handled your request, please
consult the attached complaints procedure.

Regards,

Information Governance Team
