Dear Jordan,

Thank you for your FOI request sent on 20^th September 2017. You asked:

As part of your trusts clinical response to emergency department sepsis
presentations; could you clarify whether antibiotics are administered
under Patient group directives (PGD) or prescription only?

Could you also please provide me a copy of your emergency department
Sepsis proforma/flowchart/toolkit.

Under Section 1(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I can
confirm that The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust holds
information that falls within the definition in your request which is set
out below:

1.       As part of your trusts clinical response to emergency department
sepsis presentations; could you clarify whether antibiotics are
administered under Patient group directives (PGD) or prescription only?

Antibiotics are currently administered on a prescription basis but the
Oncology Department is trialling a pilot scheme using cards that are given
to patients who are at risk of neutropenia sepsis and are undergoing
chemotherapy. These cards are given to ED staff if the patient presents to
A&E. This then allows nursing staff  to give IV Tazocin (or another
antibiotic if Penicillin allergic) immediately if the criteria on the card
is met without waiting for a doctor .

2.       Could you also please provide me a copy of your emergency
department Sepsis proforma/flowchart/toolkit.

Please see attached.

Please also find attached a briefing which explains your rights to request
a review by the Trust or to complain to the Information Commissioner’s
Office if you are not satisfied with the response from the Trust, and an
outline of the Trust’s policy on the Reuse of Public Sector Information.
