Security Vetting

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear Ministry of Defence,

Prior to my tour at Christmas Island for the British Nuclear Tests in 1958 I was 'Security Vetted'.

Could you please supply the following information:

1. Were all Servicemen security vetted prior to attending the nuclear trials?

2. If not: Why were some vetted and not others?

3. Were there different levels of security vetting?

4. If this was the case, what were they? and what level was I placed in.

I look forward with interest to receiving the answers to the above questions.

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear Ministry of Defence,

The statutory 20 days have now elapsed to answer this FOI. Could you please advise me what has caused the delay and a date for a response.

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear Ministry of Defence,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Ministry of Defence's handling of my FOI request 'Security Vetting'.

I have requested details regarding security vetting and the request has been ignored. Could you please investigate this matter and supply the information requested or give reasons for refusal to conform to the regulations laid down under the Freedom of Information Act.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address:
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/se...

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear Ministry of Defence,

On the 20th February 2012 I placed an FOI requesting the following information:
1. Were all Servicemen security vetted prior to attending the British Nuclear trials?
2. If Not: Why were some selected and not others?
3. Were there different levels of security vetting?
4. If this was the case: What were they? and what level was I placed in?

On the 20th March I informed the Ministry of Defence that the statutory 20 days had elapsed and requested information on my request.

on the 6th April having received no information or acknowledgement regarding my FOI requests I requested an internal review.

It is now the 18th May 2012 and I have not had the courtesy of an acknowledgement or reply to my original request.

I believe Three Months is more that satisfactory time for you to communicate regarding this FOI. Would you please explain the reasons for this tardiness and supply the answers to my questions!

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear DCDS PERS-SEC-FOI MAILBOX (MULTIUSER),

Thank you for your rather belated response to my FOI dated 20 February 2012: Reminder sent 20 March 2012: Requested Internal review on the 6 April 2012: a further reminder on the 18 May 2012 and finally the Information Commissioner was informed on the 11 Jun 2012 regarding the total lack of response to my FOI. It appears it is only due to the Services of the Information Commissioner that I have finally received a reply.

You are correct in your assumption that I have placed these questions before but you refused to answer them on the grounds that I had placed too many FOI questions. This was back in 2010, it is now 2012. This appears to be a similar scenario to the disgraceful performance shown by the Ministry of Defence when I requested radiation levels: It took six years before they admitted having the information I sought.

Some questions in my FOI require very simple answers: Questions 1 and 3 only require a 'Yes' or 'No' answer.
We are informed that meticulous records were kept during the nuclear tests, if this is this case, there should be no great difficulty in obtaining the answers to my questions.

I look forward to reading your reply

Yours sincerely,

Dave Whyte

Dear DCDS PERS-SEC-FOI MAILBOX (MULTIUSER),

I find some of the answers given by the Ministry of Defence rather infantile!

Your reply goes on and states "and does not require public authorities to answer questions."

What do you think a "Freedom Of Information question is" if it is not a question?
Sorry, I forgot, you are not permitted to give views, or opinions.

Your reply also quotes: " The Freedom of Information Act gives the applicant the right to access recorded information".

I wonder what happened to all the documents that we are informed were recorded with 'Meticulous Care' during the Nuclear Tests.

I received the same type of nonconformist answers from the Ministry of Defence when attempting to obtain radiation levels at ground zero. It took six years until the case went to a First Tier Tribunal, then the Ministry of Defence miraculously discovered the missing documents. This showed the Ministry of Defence had been lying for over six years in order to cover up the atrocities committed over 50 years ago.

Yours sincerely,

Dave Whyte

Dear DCDS PERS-SEC-FOI MAILBOX (MULTIUSER),

In order to conform to the regulations laid down under the Freedom of Information Act can you please pass my request for information to the person who deals with Internal reviews.

Yours sincerely,

Dave Whyte
