School waiting list distance offer data for September 1st 2017

The request was successful.

Dear Richmond upon Thames Borough Council,

I saw this FOI request (FOI #401246) for 2016 school admissions data: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/l...

Please can you send me the same data (cut off distances for Sept 1st) for 2017 for all Richmond schools? Also please can the council publish this as standard every year? It's useful to see how far the waiting lists move and much more useful than just the distances in the admissions brochures.

Yours faithfully,

V Sawyer

Dear V Sawyer,

Re: Request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000

Your request for information which was received on 8 September 2017 has
been considered.

Please find our response below.

Your request:

I saw this FOI request (FOI #401246) for 2016 school admissions data:

2017 for all Richmond schools?  Also please can the council publish this
as standard every year? It's useful to see how far the waiting lists move
and much more useful than just the distances in the admissions brochures.

Our response:

The attached tables 21350_1 and 21350_2 show the furthest distance offered
to on National Offer Day, and the subsequent furthest distance offered by
1 September 2017 for primary and secondary admissions.

The tables include information for all secondary schools and for all
community and free primary schools, but not for Church Schools, since not
all of these have distance as a standalone criterion and may have received
applications during the summer that need ranking according to their
criteria.

This information may be obtained by contacting the relevant schools
directly.

We are unable to include this information in future brochures as these are
published before 1 September so it would not be possible to include this
information within the publication.

I hope you are satisfied with this response.

If you are dissatisfied please let us know in writing, setting out your
reasons why and send to:

Dear Tania Robinson,
Thanks for the list - that's so useful to parents and would make them so much less anxious about school admissions! There are even people who are losing house sales because Rightmove are using your National Offer Day distances from your brochure to show whether streets are unsuccessful in admissions which is a load of rubbish based on these numbers, but that's no comfort to people whose houses are blighted by it!

Can't you at least put last year's figures in the brochure to demonstrate how much they have moved in the past? Or else put the numbers on your website in early September? It would really help local parents. It's not fair to expect everyone just to know they can phone schools up to find this out, and not fair on the schools to field loads of phonecalls either. In any case when I did that for Teddington school they told me my street would have been ok, but they said they couldn't tell me the final distance that it went to so I couldn't even tell my friends whether they would be ok too. Everyone would have to phone up individually to find out which is just a stupid waste of people's time when you could so easily publish the distances every year.

Also, why have you only included one distance pairing for Turing House? Is that the Admissions Point distance? What about the distance around the permanent site too? Can's you include both like you do for Waldegrave? Please send me that extra bit of information.

Yours sincerely,

Vicky

Dear AfC Freedom of Information Requests,
I asked for the bit of information that I said was missing from the reply, which was the National Offer Day distance and Sept 1st Distance for Turing House from their second catchment.
The list you sent only included the distances for one of their two catchments (either criteria 6i or 6ii in their policy) and doesn't say which one it is. I want to know both.

Yours sincerely,

Vicky Sawyer
