Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear Sub-Treasurer of the Inner Temple,

Would you please supply the following information, all in relation to the academic year 2012-13.

1. The total amount of money given in GDL/CPE awards;

2. The total number of applications for GDL/CPE awards;

3. The total number of awards given for the GDL/CPE;

4. The total amount of money given in BPTC awards;

5. The total number of applications for BPTC awards;

6. The total number of awards given for the BPTC.

Yours faithfully,

James Bell

Subtreasurer, Sub-Treasurer of the Inner Temple

Dear Mr Bell,

I hope that the information, given below in response to your recent FOI request, is helpful.

Please note that all of the below information relates, as requested, to academic year 2012-13.

The funds for our GDL and BPTC Awards in academic year 2014-15 are greater. Those figures are broken down in more detail on our website and in our Guide to Becoming a Barrister, the 2015 edition of which will be available online and in hard copy by request from the Education and Training Department in mid September.

1. The Inn awarded £190,500 for GDL/CPE Scholarship and Exhibition awards;
2. There were 72 applicants. Eight students pursued other options prior to interview. Accordingly, we held 66 interviews;
3. We made 24 awards for the GDL/CPE.
4. The Inn awarded £1,186,425 for BPTC awards. This figure includes Major and Senior Scholarships, Benefactors’ Awards, Exhibition Awards and Duke of Edinburgh Entrance Awards;
5. We received 376 applications. By March (when we hold our BPTC scholarship interviews) a number of applicants had withdrawn, resulting in our holding 342 interviews;
6. We made 102 awards for the BPTC.

Statistics, of course, only tell part of the story. The Inn does not have a set number of awards to make each year, but rather a pot of money which we can apportion to as few or as many candidates as our Scholarships Committee feels should receive an award. As such, the number of awards made will depend entirely on the cohort of applicants for a given year, and previous years’ statistics won’t necessarily offer much of a bellwether for this year’s awards.

If you are considering a career at the Bar and are deciding on your choice of Inn, you would be very welcome to ring the Scholarships Manager Eamonn O’Reilly for a chat on 020 7797 8210.

Dear Mr Maddams,

Thank you for taking the time to prepare this information for me. Is the increase in funds that has taken place since 2012/13 exceptional, or commensurate with general inflation?

Yours sincerely,

James Bell

Subtreasurer, Sub-Treasurer of the Inner Temple

Dear Mr Bell,

Further to your recent and further FOI request I can confirm that in recent years the Inner Temple has always increased its total scholarship funds by an amount greater than the rate of inflation at the time, as we try to match if we can the annual increases in GDL and Bar course fees.
