Salaries and fees

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear University College London,

I request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act:

1) Breakdown of expected salaries, or average salaries for graduates from undergraduate degrees in years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, by subject. If average salaries for recent EU (non-UK) or international (non-EU) graduates are available, I would like those to be shared as well.

2) Tuition fees charged to first-year international students for undergraduate degrees in years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, broken down by subject.

Yours faithfully,

Alexandra Tieghi

Dear Alexandra,

Thank you for your below request for information.

Can you please clarify the following:

For question 1, can you please clarify whether we should interpret this as the average salary for EACH year 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 (i.e. - 6 salaries for each subject area for UK, EU, o/s) or would you like the averaged salaries over all those years (i.e. - one salary for each subject for UK and EU and o/s)?

Dear Mehwish Sultan,

thank you for your reply.

I would request data for each year (six salaries for each subject category for UK, EU, International).

Alexandra Tieghi

Finance.FOI Requests, University College London

Dear Ms Tieghi,

Thank you for your earlier clarification.

We are currently working on your request and have some further points for clarification in regards to question 1 of your request:

- The information for question 1, will be based on the Destinations of Leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) survey however, we only have the DLHE data from 2011-12 to 2015-16. Based on this, could you please clarify whether you only require the 2011-12 – 2013-14 salaries which, would fall within the time period you requested in your initial e-mail or would you also like the data for 2014-15 and 2015-16 included?

- As stated above, the information for question 1 will be based on the DLHE survey and so, the salary information we hold will not be inclusive of all graduates from University College London (UCL), it would only be based on those UCL graduates that responded to the survey and chose to reveal their salary information. Furthermore, the information will be based on those graduates in full-time employment. Part-time and other employment will produce too much variability which, would make the data misleading. Can you please confirm that you are happy with this approach?

- Salaries can be broken down by JACS codes, depending on time constraints under the FOI appropriate limit and fees regulations, this will be broken down by JACS subject area, or JACS principal subject, rather than detailed subject codes. Gathering salaries for each year, by domicile and by detailed subject codes would be time-consuming and the response rate is likely to be too small for each cohort. Based on this, can you confirm whether you would like this information broken down by JACS codes only or whether you would like this information broken down by department?

For more information regarding JACS codes, please see the following webpage: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/support/documenta...

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your reply.

1) 2011/12 to 2013/14 would be quite acceptable, thanks.
2) I confirm I am happy with this approach. If possible, please include rates of response per subject.

Dear Ms Tieghi,

We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request.

We can confirm that we do hold the information of the description
specified in your request and this information is given attached.

Q1) Breakdown of expected salaries, or average salaries for graduates from
undergraduate degrees in years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, by
subject. If average salaries for recent EU (non-UK) or international
(non-EU) graduates are available, I would like those to be shared as well.

Clarification received:

1) I would request data for each year (six salaries for each subject
category for UK, EU, International).

2) 2011/12 to 2013/14 would be quite acceptable, thanks.

3) I confirm I am happy with this approach. If possible, please include
rates of response per subject.

4) I confirm breakdown by JACS codes only would be acceptable.

A1) Please see the attached PDF for the requested information for question
1. Please also see below for explanatory notes regarding the data
provided.

·           We only have data based on the Destinations of Leavers in
Higher Education (DLHE) survey from 2011/12 to 2015/16, and have therefore
provided information for 2011/12 to 2013/14 only which would fall within
the scope of your request above.

·           The data provided is based on those graduates in full-time
employment. Part-time and other employment would produce too much
variability so the data would be misleading. As mentioned in the above
note, this data is based on the DLHE survey, thus the salary information
we hold is not inclusive of all graduates from University College London.
It is based only on those that responded to the survey and chose to reveal
their salary information.

·           Salaries based on less than 5 responses have been highlighted
and the HESA rounding method has been applied to the response rates. You
are still be able to see the average value but it is useful to note that
the data is based on a particularly small sample size therefore, it will
not be representative and a less accurate value than if there was 20
people responding to the salary question.

·           Salaries have been broken down by JACS codes, this has been
broken down by JACS subject area. You may find the following webpage on
the different JACS codes useful:
[1]https://www.hesa.ac.uk/support/documenta...

Q2) Tuition fees charged to first-year international students for
undergraduate degrees in years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 included, broken
down by subject.

A2) Please find attached the overseas undergraduate fee levels for all
undergraduate programmes for the years 2008 to 2014.
