Russell Group University Work on AI Reseach

We're waiting for The Citizens to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Durham University,

I'm writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act (2000) to ask that you please disclose to me details of the university's work on AI initiatives. I'd like information on:

1) Funded research agreements with both public or private bodies to work on AI, machine learning, big data, intelligent cybersecurity, and automation since 2019. This would includes dates, costs, and an outline or title of the agreements.

2) Scholorships and Masters programmes within the above fields, including those featured as part of the new national data and AI strategy initiatives.

3) University monetary sponsorship from leading AI companies.

Yours faithfully,

Max Colbert

ACCESS I., University of Durham

Dear Max Colbert

Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below in response to your
questions.

1)    Funded research agreements with both public or private bodies to
work on AI, machine learning, big data, intelligent cybersecurity, and
automation since 2019. This would includes dates, costs, and an outline or
title of the agreements.

Information not held. We do not hold information to the level of detail
required to answer your request.

2)    Scholarships

Nil.

and Masters programmes within the above fields, including those featured
as part of the new national data and AI strategy initiatives.

This information is published online at [1]Durham University Courses. For
this reason, the information you have requested is exempt under section 21
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), as it is reasonably
accessible otherwise than under the FOIA.

3)    University monetary sponsorship from leading AI companies.

It is estimated that the time taken to locate, retrieve and extract the
requested information would exceed the fees limit associated with the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). Under Section 12 of the FOIA, the
University is not obliged to comply with a request for information if the
cost of compliance would exceed a £450 threshold, a figure which equates
to approximately 18 hours of work spent searching/retrieving and
extracting requested information.

You may wish to consider narrowing your request to bring it within the
cost limit. It may be possible to provide a response within cost and time
limits if you were to provide the names of companies. Please note however,
that there may still be exemptions applicable to a refined request.

If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied. To do
this, please email [2][Durham University request email].

Please state the grounds on which you wish the decision to be reviewed and
enclose any other information that may be useful in considering the matter
further. We aim to inform you of our decision within 20 working days from
the date your request for internal review is received.

If you are not satisfied with the results of the internal review you may
apply to the Information Commissioner's Office for an independent review.
