Dear Mr Ponsonby-Talbot
Freedom of Information Request FOI001389
I enclose for your information the answers to your request:
1. What was the cost of planting the new trees?
A. The tree’s that were re-planted in December had no cost implication to the council.
2. What was the reason behind removal of the previous trees and plants?
A. The contractor failed to maintain the tree’s under their agreed contract with SBC and with the adverse weather conditions through the summer the trees died. The contractor was therefore made to replace the trees at their own cost.
3. What was the initial installation cost for the colourful up-lighting of the new trees?
A. The cost for the installation of the lights including a 5 years maintenance period was £53,000.00 which was funded through a Public Arts fund using Section 106 monies
4. What are the running and maintenance costs expected to be for the next three years for the colourful up-lighting of the new trees?
A. SBC currently have a 5 year contract period for the maintenance of both the lighting and landscaping of the roundabout. There is no expected extra cost for the maintenance of the roundabout for next three years.

Dear Swindon Borough Council,
Dear Ms Rhodes,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
As a brief follow-up, you mention that there is a five year maintenance arrangement that comes from Section 106 monies. What is expected to happen after this period? Will the lights get switched off?
Yours faithfully,
Magnus Ponsonby-Talbot
