Risk Assessments/Acidisation

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Environment Agency should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Environment Agency,

Please can you provide the results of any risk assessments that the EA has conducted regarding potential groundwater contamination associated with either acid wash or well stimulation methods involving acidisation in the oil and gas industry.

Many thanks,

Emily Mott

Dear Enquiries, Unit,

I've learned that before 2013, the EA has not permitted any oil and gas activities with regard to well stimulation, chemicals, flowback fluids or produced water. I understand the new regulation includes classification of produced water as hazardous waste because of the release of NORMS from deep underground by well stimulation activities including acidisation and hydraulic fracturing. Historically well stimulation of the deep geology in the UK would have released NORMS so I was curious to know how radioactive waste water produced in oil and gas operations before 2013 would have been stored. I have been told that produced water from acidised wells will currently be classified as hazardous/toxic and will not be permitted to be reinjected into wells on site.

On the National Risk Assessment form there are areas for all industry including oil and gas sector to indicate whether they will be using radioactive hazards and chemicals and do list pathways etc for contamination.

1. Can you please clarify if oil and gas operations had to fill in a risk assessment form which included information regarding radioactive waste and chemicals before 2013?
2. If the answer to 1 is yes, please can see a copy of the risk assessment forms for all wells at the Horndean facility
Sheepwash Road
Horndean
Hampshire
PO8 0DS

Many thanks for your help.

Yours sincerely,

Emily Mott
