Dear Mr Carter
Thank you for your request for information relating to research.
The Gambling Commission (the Commission) routinely publishes the research
it conducts here: link
The Commission is the independent regulator of gambling and does not
usually undertake formal academic research directly. However, in
performing its role as advisor to government, it has commissioned a number
of pieces of research and analysis into gaming machines. More information
can be found using the following links:
- British Gambling Prevalence Surveys link
- Gaming machines research programme: link
- Examining machine gambling in the British Gambling Prevalence
There are also other bodies which we work with who have a remit to perform
research into gambling. The Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB)
provides independent advice on the strategy and priorities for gambling
research education and treatment. You can see that their latest strategy
includes recommendations for further research into gaming machines:
The Responsible Gambling Trust (RGT) raises the required funding and
delivers appropriate programmes for research, education and treatment,
taking full account of the priorities recommended by RGSB. I have attached
a research paper that was commissioned by the RGT’s predecessor entitled:
Machines Research 1 – Mapping the social and economic characteristics of
high density gambling machine locations (Geofutures and NatCen).
If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to request an internal review of our decision, you should
write to the Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission at our Victoria
Square address, printed below.
If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you may apply
directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the
Information Commissioner will not make a decision unless you have
exhausted the review procedure provided by the Commission. The
Information Commissioner can be contacted at www.ico.gov.uk or the
Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow,
Cheshire SK9 5AF.
