Thank you for your enquiry of 26th April 2010 regarding information about compensation claims made to The National Archives. This request is being handled under reference F0024949.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives you two rights of access when you write to us asking for information. You have the right to know whether we hold the information that you are looking for, and you have the right to have the information given to you. These rights may only be overridden if the information you are looking for is covered by an exemption in the Act.

From your request I have noted that you have not stated a time frame for which your request for information applies.

In order to treat your request in the most satisfactory manner, could I ask you to clarify for which period you are seeking this information. I would like to inform you that we only hold easily searchable electronic records from 2006 to the present date. Prior to that date records were held in paper format which makes a search lengthier and may engage the cost limit described at section 12 Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.

It would also assist us greatly if you could record our reference number (as given above) on any further correspondence.

This information covers the period 2006 to the present day and relates
only to claims made by members of the public (or non-staff):

• The total number of claims made by members of the public or non-staff.

There have been no compensation claims made to The National Archives by
members of the public or non-staff.

• The total number of staff employed to administer compensation claims
in the local authority, and the total salary cost of those staff members.

There are no staff employed to administer compensation claims in The
National Archives full time. Any work of this nature would be absorbed by
staff in the relevant business area and be dealt with on a ‘business as
usual’ basis.
