Dear Joshua,

Thank you for your request for information received by The University of
Manchester on 23 July 2021 which was as follows:

Please provide me the statistics regarding reported racism at the
University of Manchester in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

1) Please provide the number of reported cases of racist abuse during
semester times, from the student’s perspective by another student.

The University has now considered your request and our response can be
found below.

Please note the following in relation to the data provided:

·         Reports included that were described as being due to racism,
religion or ethnicity.

·         Ethnicity is self-defined by the reporting party. No data is
collected on the respondent’s ethnicity.

·         ‘Other’ encapsulates any report which did not fit one of the
three requested categories. The majority of these related to a student
reporting a member of the general public for an off-campus incident.

·         Reports are documented by academic year (September-August).

2020/2021 year saw the introduction of additional categories to the system
of Hate crime or Hate incident, and Microaggressions, alongside
Harassment. The addition of these categories has shown a clear impact in
terms of reporting race-related incidents, with the vast majority of the
above data being recorded as either a Hate incident or Hate Crime, or
Microaggression.

NB: *6 reports relate to an incident involving a student and staff member,
4 of which were duplicate reports second/third-hand from the general
public after being seen via media platforms, 1 was a witness to the same
event.

I trust that this information is of use to you.

Kind regards

Sharon

Dear MTRS FOIA, thank you for the data however i am confused with the numbers and the text so please can you confirm to me what "Ethnicity Abuse by a Abuse by a Staff Abuse by a Other Student to a Member to a Staff Member to Student Student a Staff Member" means and how the value of "2 1 2" translates to the ethnic Abuse cases against Asian or Asian British in the 2020/2021 period.

Yours sincerely,

Joshua Ennim
