InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Joshua,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 23
July 2021.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

Please provide me the statistics regarding reported racism at Cardiff
University in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

 1. Please provide the number of reported cases of racist abuse during
semester times, from the student’s perspective by another student.

 2. Please provide the number of reported cases of racist abuse during
semester times by a member of staff against a student.

Where a student or member of staff informally raises a concern
of this nature, this may be dealt with initially by the Academic School or
Department and is not collated centrally. As there are 24 Academic Schools
and numerous administrative             departments it would take more
than 18 hours to collate the information. The University is not obliged to
spend more than 18 hours (as set by the Freedom of Information and Data
Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004) collating
such information and accordingly the exemption provided by
section 12(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 will apply.

We are however able to provide the following information on
incidents which have been dealt with by the Student Cases team through
formal processes. :

  2017 2018 2019 2020
Student complaint about another student 1 0 1 3
Student complaint about a member of staff 0 1 2 0

Records are held in academic years. Please note our records do
not separate reports of racial harassment, racial abuse and assault
therefore the figures below may fall into any one (or more ) of these
categories.

 3. Please provide the number of reported cases of racist abuse during
semester times between staff members.

Staff complaint about staff 0 0 0 <5

Formal complaints-Records are held in academic years. Please
note our records do not separate reports of racial harassment, racial
abuse and assault therefore the figures below may fall into any one (or
more ) of these categories.

Under Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 we
are unable to provide a greater level of detail as due to small numbers
the disclosure of information may enable individuals concerned to be
identified and would be unfair and a breach             of the data
protection principles.

 4. If the information is held, please list the race/ nationality of the
complainants.

            The following categories were recorded.

            Black- African

            Asian-Pakistani

            Asian-Chinese

            White
