Dear The British Museum,

Please could you provide the following information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000?

How many requests for repatriation of items in your collection has the British Museum received from the financial year 2014/15 to date? Please break this down by year and from which country.

Yours faithfully,

Elena Martyn

Info, The British Museum

Thank you for your email. In response to government advice, the British
Museum and some of its administrative functions will remain shut down
from 5 November until further notice. We hope to reopen and welcome you
back in early December, but please check our [1]website for further
updates.

We will endeavour to respond to you within 10 working days, but please
be aware that due to these exceptional circumstances, we may take longer
than usual to do so, and may not at present have the ability to address
the full range of Museum issues. Thank you for your patience and support
during this uncertain time.

Ticket holders for the Museum collection and for the special
exhibitions, Tantra: enlightenment to revolution and the Citi
exhibition Arctic: culture and climate, will be notified of the next
steps regarding their booking.

Object valuation, identification and acquisition
The Museum does not provide valuations and does not generally acquire
objects from private individuals. Those seeking advice on valuations or
on selling an object, should consult a local specialist dealer or
auction house – we will not respond to these types of queries. For more
information, see the Museum’s [2]Acquisition Policy.

To access the object identification service, please read the
[3]information sheet.

If your enquiry qualifies for the service as per the above document,
please contact the relevant curatorial departments from the [4]contact
list.

Our study rooms remain closed to the public until further notice.

Please delay any requests for object study as we are not currently able
to accommodate these. We look forward to welcoming you back when our
[5]study rooms reopen.

Applications for jobs, work experience or internships

The Museum does not accept speculative applications for jobs, work
experience or internships – we are unable to respond to these types of
communication. If you are interested in applying for a position at the
British Museum, please check job listings [6]here and submit your
application via the online recruitment system. If you are interested in
volunteering, you can find current opportunities [7]here.
