Freedom of Information, Jesus College, Cambridge

Dear Mr Jones,

The Master's Lodge is part of the original range of medieval College buildings and attached to the main College. It was originally part of the church of the Priory of St Radegund, which was disestablished in order to found the College in 1495.

The decision to undertake significant works to the Lodge in 2019 was made before the current Master was elected and the works were completed before she became Master. The College had planned a significant amount of works to take advantage of the long period during which the Lodge would be unoccupied (April-August 2019), which is unprecedented in the College's recent history, due to the departure of the previous Master following his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of Bath University. Normally the College would only have a short period of time at the changeover of a Master to undertake any works.

Initial works revealed serious issues with the wiring and plumbing that had to be addressed to make them safe and also revealed that the windows were dilapidated and in need of repair. Other works, including replacement of the showers to conserve water and replacing the oven were in line with the College’s environmental priorities

The Lodge and adjacent College facilities (Conferencing facilities and guest rooms) were refurbished during 2019. The principal works were as follows:

1. re-wiring and re-plumbing to meet building regulations and remove gas oven.
2.paint and decorations including repairs to window frames and high level safe access.
3. creation of two kitchens, one small space for the household and one larger space for the College chefs and their team to cater for conferences and formal events
4. general plumbing services and bathroom upgrades (x4) for household use and for College events
5. cabling: fire alarm, intruder alarm and internet upgrade
6. refurbishment of flooring

Total project costs were £203,836.24
