Recruitment of Pupils// Statistics held by the BSB
Dear General Council of the Bar,
I would be grateful if you revealed the following relating to the Bar Standards Board:
- If any Chambers or individual barristers have been disciplined for unfair pupillage recruitment tactics (e.g nepotism);
- If possible, please also name these chambers or individuals;
- The number of complaints received from the public in the last five years over unfair recruitment of pupils.
Yours faithfully,
Alice Ayres
Dear Ms Ayres
This is to acknowledge receipt of your request. The General Council of the Bar is not subject formally to the Freedom of Information Act as we are not a public authority as outlined in Schedule 1 of the Act; however, we endeavour to respond to such requests with within the spirit of the Act, in the interests of transparency.
The Bar Standards Board (BSB) does not discipline Chambers - only individual barristers. We do not release names unless that information is already in the public domain, such as in press releases. (https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/new...) Disciplinary findings are listed on the BSB's website, but this does not include the reason for the finding. https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/for....
I have asked colleagues for the number of complaints we have received about unfair recruitment of pupils and will let you know as soon as possible. We will aim to send a reply within the 20 working day time limit but I should warn you that, due to staff shortages arising from the coronavirus situation, there may be a slight delay.
Yours sincerely
