Dear [Name Removed]

I refer to your request for information below with response included.

In order for the University to identify staff as British Muslims, the
University is reliant on staff providing self-identified information on
both ‘Nationality’ (selecting UK) and ‘Religion or Belief’ (‘Muslim’).
Firstly, staff may choose not to provide this information. Secondly, the
University has only collected data on ‘Religion or Belief’ since the
2012/13 period, when this field was introduced to the HESA staff return.
Lastly, the University only holds this type of special category personal
data on our systems up to 6 years after a staff member has left Glasgow
Caledonian University. As such, your requested reporting period dating
from 2010 does not allow for staff who identified as ‘British Muslim’ if
starting employment before 1^st August 2012 as the University may not have
captured their ‘Religion or Belief.’

Please note these points when reviewing the information below.

1) How many British Muslim employees have you recruited? Please provide
figures for every year since 2010.

Calendar Year No. of New Employees*
2012 <5
2013 <5
2014 <5
2015 <5
2016 <5
2017 <5
2018 <5
2019 <5
2020 <5
2021 5
2022 <5

*Please see Note 1 below.

2) What is the average length of service?

The average length of service of ‘known’ British Muslim new starters is
1.9 years. For staff still currently employed, this is up to today’s date
(16-Mar-2022).

Please refer to the statement above to understand how this number may be
impacted by reporting measures.

3. How many British Muslims have you employed in communications/media
roles since 2010?

Less than 5. Please see note 1 below.

Note 1

As these numbers are small, to provide the actual figures could lead to
the individuals being identified and, as such, would contravene the data
principles in Article 5(1)(a) the GDPR.   The University is relying on
Section 38(1)(b) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 to
withhold this information.

Please find attached a review notice setting out the steps you may take if
you are not satisfied with the response provided to your request. If there
are any questions in relation to this request, please contact the
University at [1][email address]

Yours Sincerely,

Lynsey Green
