I have spoken to the relevant colleagues within the Department in
connection to your request below.

They inform me that the Department of Health are not responsible for
deaths records in Northern Ireland. The General Register Office (GRO) for
Northern Ireland is responsible for the administration of the registration
of deaths. The GRO for Northern Ireland is part of the Northern Ireland
Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). NISRA is an executive agency
within the Department of Finance (DoF). However you can contact [1]NISRA
through this link.

I hope this is helpful

Dear Jeff,

Many thanks for your email.

I note that the Department states that it is not responsible for death records in Northern Ireland.

However, the Department regularly announces the number of Covid related deaths and, therefore, must surely have this information even if it does not generate it.

My request is for whatever the Department holds in response to my request.

Can you please, therefore, confirm whether or not they hold such information and, if they do, please provide it.

Many thanks for your help.

Yours sincerely,

Jonny Dunlop

I have received this response from the Information and statistics Division
in the Department in response to your email query below.

" In order to provide timely updates in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,
the Department of Health (DoH) reports daily figures on the number of
deaths reported to the [1]Public Health Agency (PHA) where the deceased
had a positive test for COVID-19 and died within 28 days, whether or not
COVID-19 was the cause of death. These figures are not based on
information contained within a death certificate.

Daily updates provided by the DoH can be found at the following link:

The Vital Statistics Team in the Department of Finance provide statistics
on vital events registered by the General Register Office (GRO) for
Northern Ireland; these include death registrations. This information,
included that published by cause of death, can be found at the following

The figures are not therefore held by DOH, only reported by, or through,
