Pupil Premium pupils attending grammar schools

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Education,

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request for census data for the 163 selective (grammar) schools for the last 3 years. Ie. autumn census data for 2019, 2018, 2017.

Please can you send me the data for:

a) The number of year 7 pupils on the school roll, at each grammar school, for each of these 3 years.

b) The number of year 7 pupils who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding, at each grammar school, for each of these 3 years.

Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Joanne Bartley

Dear Joanne,

I have a small clarification to make regarding the request below.

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request for census data for
the 163 selective (grammar) schools for the last 3 years. Ie. autumn
census data for 2019, 2018, 2017.

Please can you send me the data for:

for each of these 3 years.

b) The number of year 7 pupils who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding,
at each grammar school, for each of these 3 years.

We currently publish data on the number of pupils in each school year at
school level from the spring census rather than the autumn census.  The
number of pupils in each year group is published by school in the
‘underlying data’ files available at
[1]https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics...

First, download the zip file "Underlying data: Schools, pupils and their
characteristics 2019" then within this file select
"Schools_Pupils_and_their_Characteristics_2019_pupil_characteristics_UD.csv".
The file can be filtered by column Q to give all state-funded secondary
and by column W to give those with a selective admissions policy. Columns
FC and GQ give the figures for year 7 (by genders separately).

Figures for 2017 and 2018 are available at
https://www.gov.uk/government/collection...
along with previous years.

Would the published data from spring census suffice for the first part of
your query, rather than the unpublished autumn census data? Happy to
discuss further as needed, you can contact me at
[2][email address]

Kind regards

Sean

Dear Sean,

Thank you very much for your helpful reply, and for explaining how to find some of this information. Yes, it would be fine to use the spring census data. I appreciate your help with this request.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Sean,

Sorry, I couldn't use the email address you provided as it was blocked by the FOI website I am using. I just had a question on the data.

As I mentioned, the spring census will be fine, and I found the year 7 pupil numbers in the file Schools_Pupils_and_their_Characteristics_2019_pupil_characteristics_UD.csv that you pointed me too. However the 2018 and 2017 data only seems to have pupils by age and not year group, which is not quite the same data. Am I missing something? I think I looked in the equivalent file. Or, perhaps, you could provide the year 7 numbers, if this is not available elsewhere.

Thanks for your help so far.

Yours sincerely,

Joanne Bartley

Dear Joanne,

I've also had trouble with emailing via whatdotheyknow. You likely received two very similar responses in the first instance so apologies for that but did not know it had sent and wanted to be sure.

With respect to the 2017 and 2018 data for year group, with apologies, this is in a differently named dataset for previous years. They are in the same place, within the zipped folders for those years, but are those with _schools_ncyear_ud in the filenames.

I hope to provide the pupil premium figures requested very soon.

Kind regards
Sean

Dear Joanne,

Please find attached the FOI response. With sincere apologies for the delay.

You may also receive a further response from our correspondence system with the same information, but I wanted to email also to make sure it got through.

Dear Sean,

Thank you, this is very helpful and I appreciate your work on this.

I just have a question about cell C93, Westcliff High School for Girls shows a figure of 24.5 but I believe it should be a whole number. The same thing occurs at E127. It could be the schools entered it this way? I know they don't have half-children attending. :) If you had thoughts on what this means I'd be grateful.

Yours sincerely,

Joanne

STATISTICS, Schools, Department for Education

Hi Joanne,

There are two possibilities for fractions occurring. The first is that a pupil is part time at the school. The second is due to how funding is allocated. When two schools record the same pupil (possibly due to changing schools in the year) and the conflict cannot be resolved during the data collection period, the funding is split between the two schools and 0.5 would be recorded.

I hope that helps

Kind regards
Sean
