Dear Ms McNeil

Thank you for your email received on 27 May 2017 requesting information
about Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority claims.

This request has been handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(“the 2000 Act”).

I will now respond to your request:

In the context of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, it
would be very helpful to know

1. since when you've been keeping records of compensations paid to victims
of child sexual abuse;

CICA started keeping fully computerised records when the tariff scheme was
introduced on 1 April 1996.

2. the number of appeals you've received per year since the beginning;

Please see below table which details victims of sexual assault where the
applicant was under 18 years old at the time of the incident, they claimed
for sexual assault and the case went to appeals stage:-

Calendar Year Appeal Received Number of cases that went to Appeal
2012 59
2013 148
2014 149
2015 136
2016 41
2017 1

The above table does not include cases prior to 2012 as these were paper
applications and the incident type was not recorded.  The figures do not
include any archived cases because the archived database cannot be
searched using your specific criteria.

3. the number of successful awards;

Please see below table which details victims of sexual assault, where the
applicant was under 18 years old at the time of the incident, that were
successful in receiving an award for sexual assault in the stated year:-

Calendar Year Award Received Number of Award Received
1996 97
1997 126
1998 261
1999 90
2000 379
2001 276
2002 242
2003 302
2004 400
2005 448
2006 584

2013 2651
2014 2560
2015 2243
2016 1207
2017 60

The above figures do not include any archived cases because the archived
database cannot be searched using your specific criteria.

4. the average amount of award;

The total spend, since 1996, on cases where the victim was under 18 years
old at the time of the incident and they received an award for sexual
assault was £302,008,838 giving an average award of £11,166.49

5. the degree to which victims are satisfied or not with your
compensation.

We do not hold this information.

I hope this information is useful.
