Dear The Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,

I am undertaking a study on the numbers of Public Health/Welfare Funerals undertaken by NHS Trusts. I would appreciate it if you would provide answers to the following FOI request.

1.The total number of public health funerals (where the deceased has no relatives or there is no one else willing to pay) that your Trust has undertaken for the financial years between 2007 and 2010
2.The number of public health funerals that your Trust has
undertaken by gender for the past 3 financial years
3.The number of public health funerals that your authority has undertaken by age for the past 3 financial years
4.Since April 2009, how many cases have there been where family and friends refuse to finance or make arrangements for their relatives funeral?
5.How much have the burials/cremations cost the trust broken down by year for the last three financial years?
6.How much does your trust typically (average cost) pay for a Public Health Funeral?
7.What does your Trust provide at a Public Health Funeral?
8. what relationship do you have with your local council(s)
regarding funerals of this nature?

Public Health Funerals

Thank you for your request for information under the requirements of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000. We started work on this request on
21/05/2010. As per section 10 of the Act, you can expect a reply no later
than 20 working days from this date.

There maybe a fee payable for this information. This will be considered
and you will be informed if a fee is payable. In this event the fee must
be paid before the information is processed and released. The 20 day time
limit for responses is suspended until receipt of the payment. If there is
a fee payable we will write to you again to let you know the process in
this event.

For your information, the Act defines a number of exemptions which may
prevent the release of the information you have requested. We will assess
whether any of the exemption categories apply to your request (as per PART
11 of the Act) and if they do, or if there is a delay due to the
application of an exemption we will write to you again.

Public Health Funerals

Thank you for your email received 21^st May 2010. You asked for
information regarding costs of public health funerals unclaimed by the
Trust.

Your request for information has now been considered. I will answer your
queries below in turn:

1. The total number of public health funerals (where the deceased has no
relatives or there is no one else willing to pay) that your Trust has
undertaken for the financial years between 2007 and 2010

The Trust has undertaken 4 public health funerals between 2007 and 2010
where money could not be reclaimed.

2. The number of public health funerals that your, Trust has undertaken by
gender for the past 3 financial years

The Trust has undertaken 4 public health funerals, two females and two
males in the past 3 financial years where money was not reclaimed.

3. The number of public health funerals that your authority has
undertaken by age for the past 3 financial years

The Trust has undertaken public health funerals on a 63 year old, a 64
year old, a 69 year old and an 87 year old in the past 3 financial years
were money was not reclaimed

4. Since April 2009, how many cases have there been where family and
friends refuse to finance or make arrangements for their relatives
funeral?

The Trust does not hold this information.

5. How much have the burials/cremations cost the Trust broken down by
year for the last three financial years?

Please see table below for burials /cremations have cost the Trust in the
last three financial years:

2008 - 2009 £0.00
2009 - to date £945.00

6. How much does your trust typically (average cost) pay for a Public
Health Funeral?

The Trust typically pays £800 for a Public Health Funeral.

7.What does your Trust provide at a Public Health Funeral?

The Trust would provide the Funeral Director and Bearers, Coffin, Hearse,
Cremation fees, floral tribute, Obituary at a Public Health Funeral.

8. What relationship do you have with your local council(s) regarding
funerals of this nature?

The Trust has a very good working relationship with social services.
Social Services will provide a property search for the Trust to establish
whether a deceased person has relatives or not. Social services will
arrange funerals where there are next of kin but will not or cannot make
their own arrangement for either personal or financial reasons.
