Dear Terrence

I am writing further to your request for information regarding A100 Medicine applications.

We have assessed your request and can confirm that we are unable to provide information as the data requested would relate to an individual on a line by line basis (even if anonymised). We believe this information is exempt under section 40(2) of the Act, personal information, as disclosure would breach data protection regulations. Providing it could enable the individuals involved to be identified and these individuals would have a reasonable expectation that their information will not be disclosed.

We recognise that from the information provided here alone, it would be difficult to identify the individuals concerned. Nevertheless, under the remits of data protection regulations, we note that personal data constitutes that from which the Data Controller can identify an individual. Therefore there may be other information which you could obtain from the University, either through further Freedom of Information requests or other means, that could be used to identify the individuals here.

We would be happy to re-consider any new request in relation to overally numbers or which would not have implications in relation to personal information. However, please do note that we do not release figures which are less than 5 as to do so would greatly increase the likelihood of individuals being identified, which would breach data protection regulations as these individuals have a reasonable expectation that their personal data will not be released.

If you would like to send in an amended request, we will respond to it within twenty working days from the date of receiving it.

I hope that this is of help. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any enquiries regarding this email.

Yours sincerely,
Karen Page

Dear Terrence

Thank you for clarifying your request for information. This was received on 29 September 2020 and is being dealt with under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The reference number of your request is 3980.

We will aim to respond to your request within twenty working days. Please note this is calculated from the following working day from receipt of your clarification.

Please be aware that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and following Government advice, the University is moving to online teaching and staff are working remotely, this may mean that access to some information held locally or on certain systems may not be readily available at this time.

Where it becomes clear that the information you have requested is not available due to the current situation, we will of course write to you and advise you of this.

I hope that this is of help. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any enquiries regarding this email.

Dear Terrence

I am writing further to your request for information regarding A100 Medicine applications. A search of our electronic and paper records has been completed and I can confirm that the information requested is held by the University.

In answer to your request:

Can you provide the following information for graduates applying for A100 medicine in an excel sheet for year 2017, 2018 and 2019:

1) Home or International student
2) Degree class (eg: 1st, 2:1)
3) Is the Degree from EU or non-EU universities?
4) Do they have Master or PHD? If yes, please state in the excel whether are they Master or PHD holder and from EU or non-EU universities
5) UCAT score
6) SJT score
7) Are they invited for interview?
8) Did they received an offer?

The data we are able to provide for your request is attached.

Where figures are less than 5 we do not specify the exact number as to do so would greatly increase the likelihood of individuals being identified, which would breach data protection regulations as these individuals have a reasonable expectation that their personal data will not be released.

The risk of this is greatly increased where numbers are less than 5 and it is for this reason that we do not specify such small numbers of individuals. Should an individual be identified then the University would be in breach of data protection regulations.

We are unable to provide any further information for your request as this data relates to individuals. We believe it is exempt under section 40(2) as disclosure would breach data protection regulations because these individuals have a reasonable expectation that their personal information will not be disclosed.

We considered whether we could provide averages in relation to the UCAT or SJT scores but estimate that the cost of complying with these parts of your request would exceed the appropriate limit as defined by the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The reason for this is that to obtain this data, we would need to look at all applicants during these years to first identify whether they were degree holders and, secondly, to find their scores in order to work out the average. The Act sets a maximum cost of £450 for public authorities responding to requests for information. This represents the estimated cost of one person working for 3.5 days in determining whether the information is held, locating it, and retrieving it. Under Section 12 of the Act the University is not obliged to comply with a request that would exceed the appropriate limit and we will not be processing these parts of your request further.

If you are unhappy with the way in which your request has been handled and wish to request a review of our response or to make a complaint, please see the attached information sheet and form.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any enquiries regarding this email.

Yours sincerely,
Karen Page
