Dear University of Manchester,

How common (as a percentage), is it for employees to be dismissed during, or at the end of a probationary period?

Please separate your answer in those dismissed during, and those dismissed at the end of, a probationary period.

Yours faithfully,

Dear MTRS FOIA,

This response is not satisfactory. Assuming that the University keeps a record of these data (i.e. numbers!) it will be possible to calculate and present them as a percentage.

Yours sincerely,

J. R. Williams

MTRS FOIA, University of Manchester

Dear J. R. Williams,

The Freedom of Information Act provides access to recorded information only. It does not oblige an authority to "create" data to respond to a request, which is in essence what you are asking us to do below by requesting that we calculate this data for you and present it to you as a percentage.

We do not hold percentage data. In addition to this, there are no date parameters included with your request, so we have no frame of reference to even provide you with any figures, so that you could create your own percentage if you so wished.

Therefore you would need to submit a new request for figures rather than a percentage however you would need to think about what date range you would want for this so that we can frame any response accordingly. I would also point out that I cannot advise just how readily this information would be available as it is possible we may have to manually assess employee files to extract the data. Therefore to ensure we are able to respond to your request within the 18 hour 'Appropriate Limit' (as defined in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004) you may also wish to limit your request to a particular directorate, faculty or school that you are interested in (details of our structure can be found at https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/st...). This advice is provided to you in accordance with our duty at Section 16 of the FOIA.

Should you choose to submit a new request we can make these enquiries of the Directorate for Human Resources and respond accordingly in line with the requirements of the FOIA.

Kind regards

Sharon
