Dear Mr Khan,

Thank you for request below.

We need some clarification from you in order to provide you with the information you have requested please.

Please could you explain what you mean by a retake? Is it a student who retakes the year of study?

Also we will not be able to provide the data for 2019 until the middle of January as Exam boards may still be on-going and the grade Fail is not used.

Kind regards

Dear Bhavika Dhanak

Apologies for the delay in my reply. To clarify I would like the information regarding students that have to resist their exams in August if they failed to pass in the may/June exam period.

The latest data you have available is sufficient

Yours sincerely,

Khan

Dear Umair

We have completed the compilation of information in response to your
request.

We can confirm that we do hold information of the description specified in
your request and this information is provided attached.

I kindly request that you inform me of what the results are for students
for each of the taught postgraduate courses you have for each academic
year. Please split this into number of students per grade for each subject
per year e.g 2017 MSc psychology: Distinction - 8, merit - 12, pass -6,
fail - 2

In addition please include the number of retakes in the same year for each
course

Please provide this information for each academic year from 2016 till
2019.

The data is split into :

-       Awarded results (Other, Aegrotat, Distinction, Merit and Pass) for
2016/2017/2018;

-       The Number of Students who failed for 2016/2017/2018. We do not
hold grades for students who have ‘failed’; and

-       Re-takes for 2017/2018.

Personal Data exemption

As you can see, exact counts totalling five or less, in the table above,
have been withheld because these are personal data of third parties or, if
linked with other personal identifiers in the public domain, would be
likely to become  personal data. This information has been withheld under
section 40(2) of  the FOIA by virtue of s40 (3)(a)(i).

Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA where (i) the requested information is
personal  data relating to someone other than the requester and (ii) its
disclosure  would breach any of the data protection principles. In this
case we  believe that the requested information could relate to and
identify  individuals and would be considered as their personal data. The
disclosure  of this personal data would not be within the reasonable
expectations of the individuals concerned and it would be unfair to do so;
this therefore breaches the first data protection principle.

It is for these reasons that this information is exempt under section
40(2) of the Act.

As the section 40(2) exemption is an absolute one, there is no need to
conduct a public interest test.

for non-commercial research purposes. The information may also be used for
the purposes of news reporting. However, any other type of re-use, for
example by publishing or issuing copies to the public, will require the
permission of the copyright owner.
