Policy, rules and guidance in response to complaints
Dear General Medical Council,
Please provide all updated policy, rules and guidance that the must GMC follow in response to complaints about doctors. I am, for example, looking for information that must be followed on the GMC receiving a complaint about a doctor and making a decision as to whether or not to investigate.
Yours faithfully,
minal mistry

Dear Minal Mistry,
Your information request - IR1-2514693398
Thank you for your email dated 19 November, in which you ask for policy, rules and guidance in response to complaints, particularly information that must be followed by the GMC on receiving a complaint. I have considered your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). I'm sorry for the delay in providing this response and any inconvenience caused.
The GMC's investigative aim is not to resolve individual complaints or punish doctors for past mistakes, but rather to take action where we need to in order to protect patients or maintain the public's confidence in the medical profession.
Here's the link to the GMC's thresholds guidance: https://www.gmc-uk.org/-/media/documents... which explains the thresholds for referral to the General Medical Council and clarifies matters where we can and cannot take action.
Please also see the GMC website 'How we make decisions': https://www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/informat.... This link provides copies of various guidance used by GMC decision makers to help them come to a conclusion on a complaint.
